But back to my question. If a bunch of Europeans knelt down, or even some of them, while the anthem was being played, what really would you feel. No bullshit, no defending a point on an internet, how would you really feel........

You're comparing an international, political event to a game of football...

The flag is an American symbol for freedom. Even individuals who chose to protest against it are being patriotic--it's their free right to do so as Americans. Taking a knee during our national anthem was never meant to be a full-on sign of disrespect, which is why the NFL players went down on one knee. Did you read that NYT article written by one of the NFL protesters? Do so, as it explains their gesture.

ISIS doesn't even figure into the discussion. They don't care about our Bill of Rights, nor are they American citizens, nor are they "taking a knee". Their actions show that they are the enemy of pretty much everything except for their own narrow-minded warped world view, so their motivations for burning our flag (which, again, is really really really different from NFL players taking a knee during our anthem) are not rooted in patriotism, principles, or anything that has to do with this discussion. Japanese soldiers during WW2 routinely burned the US flag--it's what enemies do, they burn effigies/symbols of their opposition. But such actions are world's apart from an American black athlete raising his fist or taking a knee.

The flag is not an American symbol for freedom. If anything that is what the confederate flag was. Your flag is just a representation of its countries constituent parts and history. You love the heart holding when you want yet disregard it or excuse it when a political point is being made.....

No mate, I have no idea who Colin Kaepernick is or what he stands for. I do however, even as a Brit, have some idea what your flag and anthem mean to your people, or perhaps I should say I used to. I think you guys are ripping yourselves apart, and I've said so throughout this thread. First it was Trump, then is was the Confederates, then the Statues, and now your own flag. It's your flag, your history, your military, your beliefs......but don't start complaining when anyone outside of the USA treats your Stars and Stripes and hand on the heart with derision when you don't give a stuff yourselves....

Pete our flag or anthem could change tomorrow and it wouldn't change what the US is or to stands for. That is enshrined in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. It is the living up to the ideals in those documents that matter, not any symbol. Hell National Anthem wasn't even the official anthem until 1920 or 30s.

What you are missing is that Trump toed a serious line in suggesting private companies fire people for "disrespecting the flag". That is the government putting a bit of pressure on a company to suppress their employees protests. That bumps right up to a violation of their first amendment rights.

The fact that so many Americans applaud him for this is appalling and unAmerican

I answered your question Pete and why is it relevant anywway, it is not some Europeans who are kneeling it is Americans protesting police brutality.

What if American soldiers did the same. What is appalling is that you guys are excusing it. As I've said, protest in any way you wish, but there has to be something that is just a step too far.......

Quite honestly I'd want to know why. They would obviously be trying to call attention to something, bring it out in the open so it could be discussed.

Yet you would be aghast and downright upset if some German politician did it, in support of protesting against your police brutality.....
