Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

I too support the Electoral College because of concerns about how a majority can ignore the wishes and input of a minority.

But don't you think then that the electoral college really shifts the democratic process to favor those small town folk and whichever party is favored? For example many of the central and south states once you leave its one big city is all small towns and districts. The smallest populations control the states vote. Even when added up the majority of these districts are far less than the big city.

That then leaves California, Washington, Oregon and New York whose populations keep growing especially in the cities being held over a barrel and the majority of its citizens feeling like their vote doesn't count.

The majority should always rule hence the idea of a democratic state and being able to vote as such. Otherwise whats the point if you live in the biggest state?

People will always flock to the populist areas where there are jobs and better standards of living. That is something that cannot be controlled. Does it make it tougher for those who stay and stick it out. Yes it certainly does. Surely their local representative could do more for them to help attract business etc...

If they did away with the two party system and introduced a system like Britain, Canada, Ireland, and well most of Europe where the Majority has a target and can then form coalition governments it would solve the need for the electoral college and allow more parties.

It is nowhere near the same process as the passage of Obamacare and you know it.

We may have to agree to disagree. I can go with "not the same process", but I can't go to "nowhere near." It's near enough. Too near.

The problem is that we have a political class that loves winning more than it loves the Constitution. We have people who go to DC and never go home pretending that they are us, and they leverage their advantage like the smart ambitious primates that they are. I believe that history will look back and judge us poorly for the decisions we've made, not just starting in 2016. It's the worst political class of our lifetimes, Legs.

As a resident of California I unfortunately know this all too well!

But overall I feel that majorities have a lot of things stacked in their favour anyway, not least money which in our political system is important, so believe that the electoral college is a useful counterweight to that.

I agree that not having a two party system would do away with a lot of the need for it but a) don't see that it would materially solve some of the issues you raise since in coalition governments small parties have outsize influence compared to their number of their voters b) I see no likelihood of the two party system going away.

I don't think it soley down to a poltical class unfortunately, they could well be just a reflection of society as a whole.

I too live in California. But i am a transplant awaiting citizenship.

I cant agree with the second highlighted comment. California is rich and well able to run itself but there are tonnes of issues in many of the counties and districts.

So much is made of how well California is doing by most of the rest of the country but that really is only true in parts. With the exception of the bay area (San Fran, San Jose, silicon valley etc...) where there is a tonne of wealth the rest of the state is sparse with its distribution of jobs and wealth. But even then buying property and getting your kids into schools can be hassle oh and working close to home forget about it.

Only a small part of San Diego and its counties is well off and its too hard to buy houses in most of the area which forces people north to Orange county or its fringes. Same can be said about LA its move inland to the east or further south.

Most will sit on a freeway for an hour or two at least just to get to work and oh yeah the roads they are sitting on badly need work. Infrastructure costs they reckon will cost close to a billion if not more for this state.

The public transport system is awful statewide with the exception of one area the as mentioned above.

Yet more and more people move west in the hope of something better. Its not sustainable.

With the rate of fires increasing and the underfunded fire services its only a matter of time before we have a big fire.

Speaking of fires the companies who graciously charge us for the water keep increasing the prices blaming droughts and well dry land and the need to water. Even though the increase go up by double each year. Which i do accept they need to charge me a little more seen as water is scarce.

I guess my point is every city and every state has its issues not just the minority in the rural areas. Spending by companies and by governments will always favor big areas but if they continue to grow it will cause bigger issues.

On the third highlighted portion. That's not always a bad thing. It depends on who the leading party get into bed with and then sometimes its a sham (like the UK right now) but other times it can be good because the smaller party gets key positions which breaks up the leading party's control.

Perhaps the electoral college is a worthwhile topic for another thread so we don't derail this one from Trump?

As for the wildfires, as you say what is happening in Portugal is unfortunately going to happen here in CA at some point and quite possibly before the earthquake that we are all dreading.

That earthquake is going to leave Stockton under 10 feet of water...but I digress.

Trump is repugnant.

Liberal hippie government jobs them.

I honestly think he thinks most of the positions he hasn't filled are just that and that Obama created them so he'll get rid of them or simply not fill them.

That and he is so awesome, that he will fix everything himself. I know this because he said so, so many times on the campaign trail. Haha!!
