Is Trump still going to protest the Senate's bill to increase Russian sanctions even with this action?
Good post. I already found this via a post I publish below, abe. I recommend that everybody read your Grauniad link at least twice. Lots of anthropology going on here.
It’s almost as if the reporter looked at this assignment as if it were an adventure into the deep jungle. Note the unnamed “observer” who editorializes:
“Observers wonder when “these people” will wake up and realize that Trump does not have their interests at heart. But rural folks have gotten used to a system that does not have their interests at heart.”
Well, gosh, when the political establishment keeps calling half the country stupid or “deplorable” it’s little wonder they’ll vote for any alternative. And it’s a safe bet if a writer referred to “these people” in the context of discussing LGBT or race issues, there’d be hell to pay. Lesson to be learned: this is why there is an Electoral College, though these days the Democrats would prefer that elections were held only in DC, NYC and Malibu.
this is also perhaps relevant, for next time

Is that ^ your comment?
She's not a reporter. This is probably from one of her books

She grew up in exactly the sort of place she writes about.

do you have the Olive Garden piece link, btw?
serious question: does the right do investigative pieces like this? ie: thoughtful, empathetic, striving for impartiality? god knows they have the money to.
I would love to read them, if there are any. but it seems like 95%+ percent of what conservative "news" outlets produce is actually just opinion.
do tell me if I'm wrong.

I too support the Electoral College because of concerns about how a majority can ignore the wishes and input of a minority. Not my script. That's the comment accompanying the link I found earlier. However, there's a "Margaret Mead in the Pacific" quality to much that is written on this line, especially from those overseas. There was one a few years ago written from an Olive Garden in Hoover, AL that comes to mind, but...
I wanted to highlight the reference to the Electoral College. The rural folks and small state folks are very attached to that Electoral College thing.
I'm in a medium-large city in a big state, but I can see their point. Lots of my loved ones are in small towns in a smallish state. Without it, they truly are without representation and they are painfully aware of that.

Which is precisely why the House and Senate healthcare bills are an abomination. No input at all from the representatives of millions of poeple by avoiding the usual process rules - no committee discussion, no public hearings, no amendments, heck there night not even be time to read the bill before voting. It is a complete travesty.
