Want to make it known that as a country, we find his policies unacceptable? Cancel the visit.
I cant stand the bulb, but at the end of the day, he is POTUS. A very important trade and security ally. Sometimes you just have to hold your nose in politics I am afraid.

I think there is something to be said for this Sean. In 6 months when the immigration ban has blown over, if we've cancelled the state visit then Trump is the sort who will throw his toys out of the pram and bear a grudge.

You might well say we shouldn't pander to his sociopathic tendencies, but the USA are as important as ever to us with Brexit round the corner and also for national security reasons.

I would still speak out to say that I don't agree on the policy, but not sure what is to be achieved by cancelling the visit at this stage. Let's see how things unfold.

Hi mate, thanks for the response, I was mainly querying whether people believe we should cancel the state visit (morally/hypothetically), rather than whether the petition will actually make any difference (it won't).

We should have it, and give him the full 9 yards. Not cos he is ace, but cos he will lap it up, not realise that with every pomp and circumstance we are laughing our tits off at him. Inflate his ego, and then use that to influence.

Unpleasant? Sure. Realistic? Yep.

no, me neither but I do find the speed and ease of circumventing due procedure unnerving.
He's a nut bar but I didn't think he'd be able to tear so much structures apart so quickly.

I don't think, deep down, many people thought he would put into practice what he's been preaching. As though it was just electioneering.

Since then though, he's employed enough far right nut jobs to make his scary stuff actually happen.

When Hitler started to segregate Jewish people, we still considered him an important ally.

Sometimes, you need to stand up and let your allies and opposition know that what they are doing is totally unacceptable. That's what May needs to do.

So inviting him over and having a word would help that, no?

Of course it will. Its the game isnt it? Blow smoke up his backside, and do deals and stuff. It stinks, but its the world we are in.

I'm just not sure I agree that it needs to be done. We shouldn't be blowing smoke up the backside of somebody who is pretty much banning an entire religion from entering his country.

I know a few Trump voters who were fairly sure that there was a lot of bravado with Trump. They knew He wasnt going to lock clinton up, they also put the muslim ban in that category, some even included the wall. They voted for him because of his economic background. They voted for him to stop Clinton. Either way, at least one has told me he regretted his decision, I'm sure others feel the same.

1. Deporting people without a valid visa is different than denying entry to folks with valid visas. Everyone detained so far (as far as I am aware) had valid visas. (and don't start with extreme vetting. Complete bunk. It already takes years to get a visa)

2. Obama didn't spend months saying he would deny entry to Muslims. Trump did. His people managed to write an EO that is purportedly about security/terrorism that doesn't explicitly name Muslims (albeit giving preference to non-majority religions) but it's purpose is obvious.

Additionally, he caused a cluster**** with how he did it. People in mid-flight unable to make a decision not to fly, etc... Led to illegal detentions. He didn't discuss the EO with any entities that would be enforcing it. It was enforced differently in different places. My constitutional and or general law knowledge is very basic but I would think that violates 14th amendment ...equal protection under the law.

*edit I see cheese and legs already answered. Sorry to pile on.

There's a few things in this. Obama didn't spend months saying he would deny entry to muslims , Trump did. So Trump did not hide what he was going to do, he told everyone and he was voted in, which to me says that America wanted it. In terms of the EO I've already said I think it's a shambles how it was initiated and enacted. As far as I know of American law and politics, and it is very little, I believe that an EO cannot change existing law but can direct government agencies to work in a certain way. I would expect some serious lawsuits to follow if he had done something wrong in law......
