By showing solidarity. If the government strongly disagrees with his methods, they should show it by cancelling his visit. That would send a message that we do not want to be friendly with a president willing to do such thingsz

No, I meant how are we supporting his policies by inviting him over? Did he support Mays when he invited her over there?

Yo guys.

I'm just catching up with discussions in here, but what are everyone's thoughts on the 1m signature petition to cancel the Trump state visit and Theresa May's reaction?
Means nothing, he will still come and there is no way they will call off the visit because of a petition.

Whether we should have made the invite so soon is open to debate but now we have done it we won't stop him coming.

Yeah, we are supporting his policies by showing solidarity? Want to make it known that as a country, we find his policies unacceptable? Cancel the visit.

Oh hang on. Trade deal. Wups.

As a country? Missed that vote.

I cant stand the bulb, but at the end of the day, he is POTUS. A very important trade and security ally. Sometimes you just have to hold your nose in politics I am afraid.

And influence him via charm and persuasion. His weakness is his ego. Get under that, and maybe he will start to recognise the game a bit more maturely than he has done so far.

Hi mate, thanks for the response, I was mainly querying whether people believe we should cancel the state visit (morally/hypothetically), rather than whether the petition will actually make any difference (it won't).

When Hitler started to segregate Jewish people, we still considered him an important ally.

Sometimes, you need to stand up and let your allies and opposition know that what they are doing is totally unacceptable. That's what May needs to do.

This is perhaps the least shocking part for me, Trump never struck me as someone who is interested in due procedure and giving deep consideration to things. He is rash, impulsive and temperamental.
no, me neither but I do find the speed and ease of circumventing due procedure unnerving.
He's a nut bar but I didn't think he'd be able to tear so much structures apart so quickly.

Personally now we have made the invite no we shouldn't withdraw it. I wouldn't have made the invite yet though which is another matter entirely.
