Yes, there were strong opposing sides during the civil rights movement, and everything having to do with Vietnam
The difference is that what presented with facts, 40% of the population didn't ignore them entirely. There was some modicum of known truth then - see Republican politicians running from Nixon when it became apparent he was a lost cause. The tide of public opinion, even among his supporters, turned.
Today that's not the case. Not by a long shot.
