Yes, there were strong opposing sides during the civil rights movement, and everything having to do with Vietnam
The difference is that what presented with facts, 40% of the population didn't ignore them entirely. There was some modicum of known truth then - see Republican politicians running from Nixon when it became apparent he was a lost cause. The tide of public opinion, even among his supporters, turned.
Today that's not the case. Not by a long shot.

This is a fairly common meme that gets trotted out by people whose political preferences lean left (myself included historically) that doesn't really hold up under any real scrutiny.
To look at a recent development of media and news evolving to meet the political preference of its consumer, while discounting the millions of years of evolution that are the basis of those political preferences, which are largely emotional, is in my opinion the single biggest reason for the current polarisation.
