Federal heat has a way of doing that to people. His problem is that his only way out of the box is to fight. Five years would be a sweetheart deal, he doesn't have much of value to trade, the prosecutor has enough to nail him to a wall and Trump is probably more concerned about appearances than anything else.
If he goes to prison, he's a failure by definition. Trump has spent a lifetime trying to prove he's not a failure to the ghost of Fred. Fred's money, invested in the stock market by the end of 1992 when the funds transfers allegedly stopped, would be worth five billion today. Trump probably could have done that, lived high on the hog, and had more money left over than he likely will when the dust settles from this. He ultimately did better than the market, most likely, but he also spent it like mad keeping up his business image. Fred would tell him that's no way to run a railroad.
The presidency was something, however much of a trainwreck, but if it ends in a jail cell it's far worse than nothing. This isn't Nixon. He could claim a number of accomplishments for conservatives, and in foreign affairs, to go along with the plumbers. He was respected on his own side, by the end. It's Harding, instead.
The whole thing is just a real-life Greek tragedy, and a parable for modern media. Raise you up, then cast you down.
I actually hope the election WAS rigged (it wasn't). It would be sweet justice for the way he behaved during his tenure.
