Current Affairs Donald Trump POS: Judgement cometh and that right soon

Trump was far from a fantastic leader and his rhetoric caused division, hatred and harm... but there's a sizeable different the likes of him and Hitler, Stalin et al.
I agree but tbh the idea that Trump would morally object to killing political opponents at least seems pretty weak given he appears to have not been bothered a jot about inspiring his followers to want to hang his loyal VP.

I think the major differences from the early period of how despots/dictators consolidated power are that some of the guardrails held - GOP office holders in states refused to “find” votes, the military didn’t get involved, even Trump appointed judges ruled based on law vs political persuasion, there were enough Dems and GOP in Congress who voted not to overturn election etc.

I genuinely don’t like to think how close some of those guardrails were to failing.

Very much so, but just as important to not let history repeat itself.
Oh I agree totally and as someone who'll promote the benefit of learning from History until the cows come home there of course alarming similarities.

But, rationally, there's also a sizeable differences in terms of the tinder, the political situation and the mechanics behind it and perhaps their desired outcome.

Again true, but on the simplest level compare the actions of Trump over his entire presidency and compare them with what Hitler did from '33-37.

You're right about the guardrails standing, however Hitler quite so often blatantly circumvented the guardrails in front of him, with such blatant openness.

Burning the Reichstag... the Purge of Röhm... the list could go on and that's before Treblinka, Sobibor, Auschwitz, the Commando Order, rape, pillaging...

Trump was bad and could have been a lot worse, but in layman's terms Hitler's legacy is 1000x worse than Trump's is - the rest is conjecture.

Let's not lose sight of what happened.

I agree with everything you are saying. My point was more that we can now view Hitler's legacy objectively. With Trump, we do not know what his legacy is, or even if he has finished.

Well, we can measure his current legacy in terms of our current best, albeit limited, understanding and in that sense they're far apart - that's my point.

In terms of Trump's potential long-term legacy, I would worry more about how his actions may embolden others more than what he will directly achieve.

Yet for what it's worth. I think Trump is finished in terms of his actual ability to manipulate wider US and global politics to the extent of mass concern.

It looks like there will be no accountability for Trump doing a coup. But of course there won't be because the people who have to hold him accountable also largely helped in performing the coup. So we're going to do nothing about it and just sit around and wait for the next time where, who knows, maybe it works. Democracy in this country is on borrowed time now.

Portman and Barr are retiring in 2022. No reason whatsoever to fear political reprisals from the MAGAngry crowd. If any still needed evidence, this is who the GOP is. Insurrection and incitement to invade the Capitol building do not meet the Constitutional standard for impeachment if those engaged in the behavior are Republicans.

Unforgivable.

The mental gymnastics required for this are incredible.

Say for example a president sold state secrets to a foreign government that we were at war with (treason and bribery being two the things that were explicitly mentioned as impeachable offense) the act was discovered and then the president resigned. Does the Senator realty think the framers meant to say “oh, he is a private citizen then, you can’t impeach and disbarr him from office”?!

It is just a process argument to try to avoid saying you were fine with Trump denying the election results and sending a mob to try and overtrun them.
