Right Pete, but who are we arresting for the BLM protests that isn't already in jail? And why would you have to wait until that entire case is closed before arresting a man for committing a capital crime that almost upended his country's entire democratic system?

And I didn't miss the point. You would only jail Trump when your own incredibly personal, specific pound of flesh is taken from "the other side" as you perceive it. So essentially what you're saying is jailing him is wrong until you run out of equivalencies.

I would incarcerate Trump...and any Democrat that either supported or ‘looked the other way’ while the various riots were going on. I’m sure it was a terrible experience for the innocent caught up on Capitol Hill. I’m also sure it was a pretty unpleasant experience watching a business you spent a life building going up in smoke....

Which Democrats? Give me an example of their incitement. And how would you define "looking the other way" so we can really throw the book at them. I'm sure we only need a vague definition so as soon as we have all the Democrats in jail for inappropriate looking of ways, we can finally earn ourselves the right to arrest a man for a capital 'kin crime.

Sometimes you have to let it go, for the benefit of the country. But for Pelosi, it seems personal, and she won’t care as long as she gets what she wants.......

You'd let it go for the good of the country apparently, lest you be like "snake" Nancy Pelosi whose only motivation could be personal. She took the violent invasion of the capitol building, that was intended to overturn a fair election and could easily have resulted in the deaths of colleagues and friends, and made it personal. Guys, I love America. I really do. I spent a large part of my life there and still have one of my children living there. I love it’s people, it’s honesty and it’s love of its country. It’s one of the very few places outside of the U.K. I would live. But right from the start of these threads, Trump etc, years ago, I felt that you were tearing yourselves apart over the selection of a President. And whether he was a pillock or not, I’ve seen in these threads an animosity, a breakdown, of the USA based on political lines. I am one of those that believes the USA is a power for good in the world. There are many that don’t. This continuous internal fight has gotten out of control and, in my own opinion, threatens your stability and ability to be the influence you are. Now some of you, well many in fact, will disagree, but that’s my view and I truly only want the best for you....

Re the bit in bold, I think it’s more that some people saw, very early on, that he was different. His rise to political prominence came around due to his ‘birther’ claims. A clear and obvious lie, which he repeated again and again, despite no evidence, and got a lot of support off the back of. A claim, which, at a glance, appeared to be at least partly grounded in racism (‘Come on. He’s not American. Look at him’. *nudge nudge*).

In the 2016 campaign, he repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims of potential voter fraud, to protect himself against a loss, and refused to commit to accepting the outcome of the election if it didn’t go his way. For many people, big alarm bells were going off, that a guy, with racist and authoritarian leanings could maybe be quite dangerous if he got in.

Now, his presidency is ending with riots and death in the Capitol, fuelled by dangerous conspiracy theories, and an angry support base, riled up by lies and misinformation, still unwilling to accept the outcome of a democratic election, and vowing further violence.

I think dismissing him as just some pillock is to miss that he was viewed as being divisive and probably dangerous, and has more than lived up to that.

It's incredible. I'm going to leave a summary of Pete's posts here for anyone who has him on ignore (and frankly, I don't blame you anymore)

• Nancy Pelosi is a "snake" and a "witch" for wanting to punish someone for a treasonous federal crime
• But he would be okay with her doing it if Pete's vague and personal version of justice has been meted out to Democrats he can't name, for crimes that don't have a legal definition (eg."looking the other way")
• Even if his conditions were met, it's likely there would be far more before he'd accept that Pelosi should be able to throw the book at a dangerously unhinged man who tried to overthrow the government. Until this undetermined hour, she is a snakewitch who should let him walk free so the country can heal
