That dire SOTU and the subsequent 'investigation' tweets suggest he's well aware that a whole lot is about to come out in the wash.
A moderate republican running on the strength of the economy could do quite well, especially if the Dems run a progressive candidate.
I don't care, I'll still vote for the progressive.

Mitt Romney is rumored to be preparing a bid but would it be worth his while? I dunno. The New York investigations are the most likely to derail him I guess. Whatever Mueller throws up wont be believed by his fanboys but if he's not paid his taxes its going to go down hill fast for him.

The RNC has fully backed Trump 2020. I think they will do everything they can to swerve Trump being primaried. Unless the poo really hits the fan.

I’m not so sure.

One of two things will happen in 2020

1. Trump will get annihilated due to his historic unpopularity and increased Democratic engagement/turnout

2. The election will be very very close (the last one came down to 80,000 votes split across 3 states).

Scenario 1, a traditional conservative independent run wouldn’t make any difference, obviously. Scenario 2, it would only take a fairly small number of votes siphoned off to make Trump’s chances all but disappear.

A conservative independent would perhaps be a way to siphon off moderate Republican voters such as Ross Perot did to Bob Dole in 96'

I hear you, but here's where moderate Republicans are going to (or should) find the error of their ways - if whoever that is isn't standing up to Trump now (or actually probably since his election), then I think he/she is going to find an anti Trump backlash. The only way a Republican can win the national election is if they have enough anti-Trump cred to talk moderate Democrats into thinking they aren't terrible people.

I have to believe this current crop of Republicans has done irreparable harm to themselves by toeing the party line and not condemning Trump.

We shall see
