Does Moyes' reign look better with hindsight given the dismal performances of his successors?

Moyes was also extremely lucky to have managed 4th on just 61 points. In the last 5 years that would have earned you 8th, 7th, 8th, 7th (Koeman’s first year finished on 61 points), and 7th.

Better than Arsenal’s invincibles of 04? Better than Mourinho’s 05/06 Chelsea, Benitez’s Liverpool with two CL finals in 3 seasons? Fergie’s United from 07-11 with 3 CL finals?

The big 4 were at their strongest when Moyes was our manager no doubt about it. The top 6 might get more attention now but City aside they are nowhere near the strength of some of those sides that were literally strolling through CL campaigns season after season.

Seen that arguement peddled a lot in recent years, the same years where English sides have been dreadful in Europe compared to the era Moyes wad around when 2/3 English sides in the semis was a regular occurance.

...so it was just United and Sunderland he killed?

Well in Moyesie.

Sunderland were on a downward trajectory for a while due to the club being a mess, so not entirely to blame, although he did fail.

United was going to be a mammoth task regardless of who took over. Following the greatest manager since the premier league started and a sqaud that needed rebuilding. He was sacked too soon because of their entitled fans.

He is a limited manager and couldn't take us any further, but to write off his time with Everton is unfair and I think deep down you know that.

Moyes took Lucas Neil on a free and sold him for a fee to one of the Turkish sides within a couple of months.

He made the odd dud signing, but gave more hairs on yer neck raising games than any manager that followed.

Moyes is far too easily recast as a dismal long-ball merchant.

We played some decent footy at times - it was prime Bainaar. We used to boss possession and create a ton of chances, though always only by attacking on the wings. As shrewd as he could be on the transfer market, he never did find that consistent goal-scoring striker. Not for more than a year or so anyhow.

Had fate realigned somehow and we got a born-earlier version of Lukaku just a few seasons sooner, before things got so stale in the final years, we could certainly have broken through the top 4.

At our best under Moyes it's the best we have been in the all the previous manager that have come after him. The days when Pienaar and Baines were ripping up the left wing and Cahill was banging them in. They were good times to go the games knowing that we were hard to beat and had players that cared.

That being said in the end he had done all he could for us as a club and probably stayed on to long!

The opening poster is bang on the money.
Moyes was our best manager since Kendall , and did it all on a shoestring.
Doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves. Shame that some have such short memories.

Are we talking about the same Moyes? Ginger get, penknife to a sabre fight?

Belting the ball 90 yards into the box and causing a melee = hairs on the neck moments?

Disingenuous as ever Dave...
..Or the home Fiorentna game (ignoring the utter dud that was the first leg) the Derby wins, the night match against United, some of the counter attacking football we played was marvellous. Martinez’s first season had some of that spark but it faded.
