Here’s another fact about Gareth Southgate. He took over a Middlesbrough team whose last game was the UEFA Cup final. 2 years prior they’d won the League Cup. 3 years of Gareth Southgate management later, they were relegated to the Championship and have still never recovered to this day.
You're gonna be amazed at what some fakester named martinez hop skipped and jumped into.

He is a victim of England over ratting thier players.

Getting them to the knocknouts is a remarkable achievement for this group of players. People always build these up to be on the level of say Portugal or Italy.

Park the bus and grind it out. Top the group. Can't ask for more.

He's been our best manager since Bobby Robson. That's not saying much though and people will say it's because he has a great squad to pick from... but so did previous managers. Id argue the generation of rooney, gerrard, lampard, scholes, cole, ferdinand, terry etc were better on paper yet they somehow did worse with supposedly superior managers.

Like all England managers post Robson... he's just too cautious, no killer instinct.

He has bona fide world class players in attacking areas, Foden, Prem player of the year, Kane, top scorer Germany and Bellingham, Reals player of the year so no we aren't overrating them

I’m sure that team would’ve gone further if it was given Denmark, Sweden, Ukraine in the latter stages of tournaments instead of Portugal, Italy, Germany et al.

Well Bobby Robson wasn’t a very good England manager either then was he.

Now compare Bobby Robson’s club career to Southgate’s please.
It's not a stellar record, but in a comparison of all England managers he would probably be ranked close to the top, probably top 4. England generally have quite a poor record in history when you look at it.

It’s a shocking record. He failed to qualify for a tournament and also finished bottom of the group in another. That’s completely unacceptable and I’ve got no idea why he’s got some sort of hero status as an England manager because he got to the semis in 1990, that’s Mike Bassett-esque.

However, again, if we want to do an acid test on who the better manager was and who knew the game of football better, then we can always compare their club careers as I said.

If they’d have put egos aside, that’s been the big difference between the ‘Golden Generation’ and the ‘New Generation’, this gen might have got a result in 2014 against Uruguay or Costa Rica, or beaten the USA and Algeria in 2010 to avoid Germany or won that final qualifier v Croatia in 2007 to get to Euro 2008 on the flip side the old Gen would have brushed Scotland aside at the last Euros and found a way to beat Denmark last week

The failure to qualify for 2008 was an all time stinker and probably the worst failure of any England manager ever.

However, again, judging McClaren and Southgate on their club careers then we can see who the better actual manager is in that instance too. You might be surprised.

Obviously Robson has a better club record but I don't think that's too relevant in a comparison of England managers. Fabio Capello has a club record for the ages but he oversaw a very poor tournament performance in 2010. Likewise Sven won Serie A when it was the best league in the world but deserves some criticism for the defeat to Portugal in 2004 and the 2006 World Cup in general where England played as badly as they have done in this tournament so far.

But yeah I think history looks kindly on Robson's England record because of 1990 but he was apparently getting absolute dogs abuse from all corners before that tournament.

Again, I’d like to see what Sven would’ve achieved if he was given the tournament draws that Southgate has been given. Alas we’ll never know. If the next manager ever gets similar luck of the draw then that’ll be a good yardstick.
