Does Gareth Southgate deserve more respect and gratitude?

I've noticed a lot of frustration with England's Euro 2024 performances and many grumblings about Southgate, G.

Accusations of tactical ineptitude, poor squad selection, of being overcautious are all coming to a head. Some feel England should have won the last Euros and done better at the last World Cup.

Others I've conversed with take a more benign view. That Southgate has consistently got England deep into tournaments, easily besting the record of more prestigious names. That's he's moulded a more likeable England and has done a lot of work (apparently- no idea on this tbf) getting the younger age groups more aligned to ensure progression to the senior team. That he took over England at a low ebb and gave some pride and belief back.

Me? Well, it's somewhere in between. A lot of good and a lot of frustration. Anyways, what you reckon GOT? Will history see Southgate treated more kindly?

Turgid predictable football aside, making a fantastic collection of talent play like Everton at any time in the last 3 years, he got us to a final where we were crushing Italy until we scored and sat back Everton style inviting them into the game where ultimately they out-cheated us as only Italian teams can. In doing that he's done more than any manager since Alf Ramsey and at the time we really did play well.

I never join in with the media driven frenzy designed to sell copy, while destroying the confidence of sny english olayer or manager, but I lost a bit of confidence in him on this squad selection. Lost more watching a squad brimming full of attacking talent, play defensively - really badly - once ahead. I was hoping I'd ignore this tournament because my interest in football has been pretty much killed off. I wish I'd followed my instinct. Have watched 3 games so far (2 England, 1 scotland) and really wish my telly had exploded instead.

Hopefully he'll turn it around.

Having said that, the likes if Goran Erikson and Capello should be embarrassed they've got a worse record than G.S.
