I agree to an extent, he deserves credit for being effective. I do think though that as soon as England come up against a good team they falter.
They lost a final on penalties, a semi in extra time and a quarter against probably the best team in the world because the small game Harry Kane choked it away. It’s disappointing ultimately I get that but it’s also not all that different than Croatia being mad at their current manager which they most certainly are not. I mean Croatia has a WC Semi final more recently than England when Southgate took over too.

Deserves no more plaudits than he's had. I'm always wary of people pointing out how deep into a tournament a team goes an absolute measure of performance - it's more often an indicator of being on the 'right' side of the draw.

But he's getting way too much stick. Teams looking poor and then clicking with a couple of minor changes isn't unusual.

England have been below average but are comfortably placed in their group and are probably playing no worse than Portugal were when they won the 2016 tournament. A Portugal side that won no group games coming third in a group containing heavyweights such as Iceland (1-1), Austria (0-0) and Hungary (3-3).

I think it depends on which England fans you ask

The more realistic ones will see a 4th place finish at the World Cup, a Euro’s Final and a narrow World Cup 1/4 Final exit to an A Tier international squad like France as a reasonable return

Could he have achieved more?

Possibly

Has he done a bad job?

Not really

I think the majority of England supporters probably aren’t THAT negative on him, they’re just not overly effusive either

He deserves credit for getting the country back behind the squad, after 10 years of shambles but he really should have been let go either after the World Cup or the Nation’s League relegation

Classic "Can't win the big one" manager or coach across sports. Regularly does well in the matches he's supposed to win. Battens down the hatches and doubles down on grinding out W's with predictable defensive tactics when it gets real. This rarely works against the best sides in team sports, whether the object batted around is spherical, oblong, a thin disc or a badminton birdie.

To borrow from poker and other games of probability, he does not play to his outs well. Failing to grasp that peak Donnarumma probably adds one to a level score a.e.t. and go for it in the Euro 2020 final remains his cardinal sin. Southgate and the FA both need a Jogi Low to follow this Klinsmann. The groundwork is now there, but their reputations depend on a tactician sealing the deal.

Credit where credit is due. He did very well after taking over at the nadir with the golden generation to replace and Allardyce's mess to clean up. His youth work continues to bear fruit. However, it's time for the program builder to go. What England needs is someone with the tactical nous to beat your guys with his guys, and his guys with your guys.

Here is a list of every team we have beaten in a tournament under Southgate.

Tunisia
Panama
Colombia (pens)
Sweden
Croatia
Czech Republic
Germany
Denmark
Ukraine
Iran
Wales
Senegal
Serbia

Spare me the bluster about how far he’s got in tournaments. He has been luckier than any manager before him in terms of tournament draws. Nobody else had the luxury of Sweden in a quarter final or Denmark in a semi final.

His club record will speak for itself. He is a clueless manager that does not understand the game from a tactical perspective. The fact he thought a right back was our best central midfielder up until apparently the last few days, says absolutely everything you need to know.

Here’s another fact about Gareth Southgate. He took over a Middlesbrough team whose last game was the UEFA Cup final. 2 years prior they’d won the League Cup. 3 years of Gareth Southgate management later, they were relegated to the Championship and have still never recovered to this day.

we have to see how it finishes. Form is bad but that can change.
Most euros and WC winners luck questionable at some point in the comp. Argentina were beat but Saudi last time round.

This is my absolute peak Southgate moment:

It says it all about his approach.
