Do our players think they're better than they really are?

I think it's probably safe to say that there are a number of Evertonians that vastly over rate our players. Nothing wrong with that in my mind. It's harmless and giving support to players is generally good.

But do the players themselves think they are better than they truly are?

I'm looking at:

Mirallas - reckons he's good enough for the Champions League even though he can't play more than 4 games in a row without being a fanny.
Lukaku - spouting rubbish about wanting to play for a huge club
Howard - walks back into the starting line up despite being poop all season (admittedly not his fault but may give him the feeling he's better than he is)
Barkley - does he think he's as good as he is?
Barry - Plays every game

There are probably more examples.

The two Belgians definitely do. I think Howard is entitled to think he's decent as he has good international pedigree and has performed well at Premier League level over many years.

Barkley is the polar opposite - I don't think he believes in his head how good he actually is. Barry is good but age is catching up, and he's exposed by the awfulness of the team as a whole.

But it's difficult to say overall. Look at Baines and Coleman for example. They have both been awful all season, yet we don't know if it's because they're not as good as we thought, or because the system and overall team performance has basically killed them off.

What Tubey said.

Barkley needs to get more of that into him, he is scared as hell right now. But Lukaku and Mirallas seem to think they deserve it all despite only giving back sporadically. Distin is like that too, but he's 105 years old so they get a bit like that.

I don't know if Barry rates himself or not. Baines doesn't care about football that much. Coleman, I think, might have a bit of this after last season.

Or, in other words, I have no idea how the players' heads work.

I'm not sure about Barkley you know. You're probably right in that he is a confidence player. But is he the be all and end all that I certainly thought he would be last season? Probably not.

Martinez thinks the players have a lot of potential. It's a fine line between giving players confidence and bigging them up too much. Of course, we don't know what happens on the training ground. He might be a proto- Franco for all we know but as Teddy Roosevelt said : ' Believe you can and you're halfway there.'
