Do Everton need to rest the goalkeeper ?

Does our goalie really need to be rested for a big game ?

I think Joel Robles is very poor, and his distribution was appalling v Swansea. Not and never will be a top goalkeeper.

That's some criticism off basically 1 or 2 games, good job you're not a manager. If Robles was so poor he wouldn't have been at Atletico Madrid in the first place or made the Spanish Euro u21 winning squad last summer (same team as Deloufeu). He's clearly a good player with a lot potential but you or I are never going to see it from the odd game here or there where every minor mistake is over analysed because no one has seen him enough to make a balanced judgement

Personally he's has had his experience in the league cup and the Fa up to now. Now is the time we need to play Tim, if we was drawn against a lesser team than Arsenal then maybe give him another chance. But as we all know, 90 mins away from another trip to Wembley so for me NO chances.

If you want a keeper as backup then generally you bring in someone with a decent amount of experience to come off the bench/step in.

Certainly appears Robles was signed to take over from Howard. However no-one seems too impressed so far and we're looking for a Southall/Martyn level keeper (or someone to grow to a top level) rather than someone with Robles resume. Saying that, there were some on here raving about him when he was at wigan.

Someone like this needs game time but we cant loan him out as he was meant to be our cover himself. I think that any slipup or giving Robles 2-3 games on the spin will see Howard relegated to the bench (if robles performs).

Like a few have already mentioned, Martinez player Robles in the whole of Wigan's FA cup triumph last season. I think it's good. It adds competition. If Robles made some great saves, really commanded the box and kept a clean sheet, it would had put pressure on Howard for the Chelsea game. It's obvious Martinez likes Robles, and as do I. Howard is 34 now and can't keep playing forever (yeah, I know goals can last into their 40's), whereas Robles is 23. Martinez sees Robles as a decent replacement, and at his age I agree. It's been a while since we've had a decent backup keeper.

De Gea -- 139 first team appearances
Robles -- 26 first team appearances

He'll be 24 at the start of next season and I've used De Gea as an example of games related to his age (he also moved countries).

It has to be said that if Atletico had any faith in him then why loan courtois and why not keep hom as no2 themselves? It strikes me as odd that he can have so few appearances at his age.

Howard has always been 'ok', to me. He has done well this season, but my heart goes crazy when he gets the ball at his feet.

For me, its always been the worry that any long shot can slip through his fingers + he doesnt instill confidence in his defence and has minimal presence...

I dont think Robles actually did that bad, I think the rest of the defence seemed to be unsettled though, that could be because Howard was not playing, or it could just have been because Swansea were pressing high up the pitch.

I think Robles should get some games, he played for Wigan in the FA cup and did OK.....

Behave lid, you're serious? Off one save you've decided our young goalie is useless and the idea of him playing horrifies you?
Are you actually the big man himself?

I see your point mate, but it's not just one moment that's convinced me. The flap against Arsenal was just the capitulation for me. I'd watched most of their cup games last season, and his league games late in the campaign and he's just blatantly lacking in the mental side of the game. Goalkeeping is a confidence based endeavor and if I can see that he hasn't got it, that's bad news.

People talking about his kicking on Sunday, do you honestly think a professional goalkeeper actually can't kick straight at all? The lad was a bag of nerves, and showed it. He was unsure of his distribution and conceded possession numerous times.

It doesn't take an enormous amount of skill to be a decent shot-stopper, but to be a complete 'keeper, one needs composure and confidence to complement his skill.

He looks a good keeper to me one who has a cup winners medal - I like the way he is quick off his line , by the way Big Nev was a bag of nerves when he first played !!!!!!!

You wouldn't have confidence mate if people were going 'oooooooooo' and sighing mate everytime you touch the ball. Same with Naismith last season.

This part in bold is spot on though.

Don't listen to 'em, Joel.

Just reiterating this.

He's infinitely better than Jan Bloody Mucha FFS!
