Do Everton need to rest the goalkeeper ?

Does our goalie really need to be rested for a big game ?

Really bugs me this..
Tim Howard was left out today, and IMO it really effected the whole back line.
Now I like Howard, I know some don't.. but he always bosses the back 4.

Really evident that there was a few blips there today.. So I ask GOT..

Does a goalie really need a rest ?

I'm not so sure it's about resting your first choice, as giving the backup some game time, so if they are needed they don't have as big a leap to make.

Disappointed when I heard Joel was starting. He has no presence and doesn't command the area. He doesn't even shout to his defence! I have no confidence in him and as much as I'll back him hen he plays, he doesn't fill me with confidence.

I can't stress enough the importance of playing Howard against Arsenal!!

Martinez played him in every round of the cup last year, including the final where he played really well. He doesn't inspire confidence though, especially as he appears to have had spoons grafted onto his feet. Howard should play at Arsenal if we're serious about winning the cup.

nope, but you don't want robles to play his only game of the season when howard gets his red-card.

there would be no communication at all.

if howard got an injury and was out for the season and robles had to come in for the rest of the season, it may take him 4/5 games to gain some sort of comminucation, by then it could be season over because of mistakes.

Is it a League Cup game or an early-round FA cup game against some League One side?

Otherwise, the answer is no. I can understand wanting to give playing time. I don't think the 5th round of the FA Cup is the place to do that.

I thought Robles was good today. His kicking was a bit Henderson but he collected a lot of crosses which Howard wouldn't have and he had no chance with the goal.

No problem with him in for Swansea at home as one injury to Howard means he's in for everything from then onwards and you want him to have at least a bit of experience playing at Goodison with Everton players.

Get Howard in for the next round, though.

I think when keepers are rested its as much about giving the deputy an opportunity of some first team game time as it is about resting the first choice keeper so they aren't too rusty when and if they are ever needed . Fabianski was good today for Arsenal.

How else does a goalie get experience?

Imagine if Howard was injured for our last three games and we are still in the race for Europe?

Would you feel comfortable putting an untried keeper in?

Robles played every cup game last season and I expect him to play every game this season.

He will be in goal against Arsenal . . . . and will stay there through to the final. I will dig this out of the vaults and post a pic of Robles and Roberto holding the cup for the second season running:cheers:
