Digne> baines at peak

I've always argued Baines is not a LB at all, and he should never be compared to any truly great Everton LB.

We may as we call Pienaar a LB too, such was the interchanging nature of their roles.

We would never have won a title with Baines as a full back in the 80s. No question of that. He has zero positional sense and he'll be forever remembered by me in a defenisive posture as someone standing off an opposition wide player crossing the ball by a good 10 yards...and usually turning his back on the cross.
Well Dave, as I have said in the past 'it's all about opinions. I'll agree to disagree with you on this. I wonder if he'd have been a better player, in your eyes, if he hadn't taken Martinis on

He was a good wide player in his day. He could never be a better defender though, because he just didn't have the mentality to do that side of his role.

Answer:

Unquestionably yes

This is what I'll always remember about Baines as a defender. Most crucial moments in Everton's recent history (on the cusp of a cup final appearance and this is what he does defending in his own box):

Baines was a better defender than Digne. Digne has too many defensive lapses to be a truly top LB.

I like Digne but he’s not as good as peak Baines.

Based on two lapses yesterday.

I base my assessment of Baines' defensive frailties on 11 seasons worth of evidence.

don't think you can judge them defensively, both are pretty average defending, Don't think I've ever gone oh yeah I remember Baines put in a solid defensive display today
it was always oh yeah I remember Baines sending a piledriver into the net

How do you know that’s what I’m basing it on?

Digne didn’t cover himself in glory against Lincoln and more than a few other games last season. Millwall in particular I can recall. If he’s up against anyone with a bit of energy (as many wingers tend to be) he can be a loose cannon.

Your opinion is that Baines wasn’t as good defensively. I disagree. I think Baines was superior both defensively and offensively. I also watched Baines for 11 seasons.

Not as good as baines in his peak one of the best players i have seen but no reason why he cant get close just needs to work on his defensive side, but made up we have digne was a bargain
