Third best I've seen in nearly 60 years.

Best for me was Ramon Wilson , Leighton Baines was a fair way behind him in second place, and, as I say, Lucas is just behind Leighton for me. Purely based on Leighton's superior defensive ability.

Please. Imagine Bottler Baines in a championship team?

Van Den Hauwe was head and shoulders above Baines. Did his job for a kick off.

Psycho Pat was very effective, in a much better team than Leighton Baines was ever fortunate to play in. VDH was also playing in an era when you could get away with snapping your opponent in two.

I know you have your Baines Jagielka vendetta going on Dave, but, Baines has been a top class left back. But then I'm sure your aware of that really.

I've always argued Baines is not a LB at all, and he should never be compared to any truly great Everton LB.

We may as we call Pienaar a LB too, such was the interchanging nature of their roles.

We would never have won a title with Baines as a full back in the 80s. No question of that. He has zero positional sense and he'll be forever remembered by me in a defenisive posture as someone standing off an opposition wide player crossing the ball by a good 10 yards...and usually turning his back on the cross.

I think Baines was better but a lot of that might have been down to that partnership with Pienaar. Their link up play at Goodison was as good as anything in the league at the time. Sure there were better players but they didn't have that understanding.

Very harsh that @davek. Baines was widely regarded as one of the best left backs in Europe in his prime. It was only him playing in the same era as Ashley Cole (who was world class) that stopped him being England’s left back for years.

Diane is boss but he needs to do it over a few seasons to be compared to baines in my book. He has the potential to be better but I think everybody is forgetting how good baines was at his peak

My dad said Ray Wilson was the best full back he ever saw. And to think we only signed him in the latter stages of his career.

...another non-full back full back.

Baines could not defend. Simple as that. No one here can hand on heart dispute that. Digne may not be a top defensive player either as he proved yesterday, but I'd take him over Baines anyday. Any 'defender' who cant get tight on an opponent or put a telling tackle in is not a defender. Yes, Baines got back goal side...that's not the same as being a defender though. Distin got him out of trouble by coming across and then Jagielka did. In front he had Pienaar who also covered for him. What a cushy number he had on defensive duties with that lot.

I think many footballers who have watched or played against Ashley Cole would disagree with you.
