To be honest, yesterday's goal has been scored a thousand times. Near post flick, headed in at the far post or middle of the goal. It's probably the most scored goal in football.

Yep.

It's a shocking goal to concede but actually, before that, DCL had won everything at the near post, pretty much.

He didn't connect fully this time and their player was there to capitalise.

The system works. The players currently have no idea how to play it.
The players can't do it and neither can the manager.

MOTD had a graphic that pointed out over a third of the goals his teams conceded at Hull and Watford came from set-pieces.

For as much as the players haven't been aggressive enough, Silva's system clearly doesn't work.

He definitely needs to alter it.

But he won't if he's used it at every club. So it's also on the players to sharpen up.

Thing is, zonal marking wasn't really the reason we conceded yesterday.

No getting around it that is absolutely shocking defending.

Its impossible to always win the first header so you have to be ready for the 2nd action and time and again we are static and not in good defensive positions. There is literally 3 Huddersfield players free in a line waiting to knock that ball in.

Hopefully it doesn't become Marcos achilles heel and if it continues to be executed so poorly he is flexible enough to change his approach to set plays.

That graphic worried me.

It is like he is persisting with a method of defending corner kicks despite it costing his team many goals since he arrived in England.

Such entrenched dogma does not bode well for the future.

It only works if you attack the ball.

Our players don't do that, they just stand there and do nothing.

I wonder what their instructions are.

Are they told to assume a position in their “zone” and ot budge from it?

That would be madness IMO but that is how it looks to me.

As others have said, I don’t see how it is any better than man marking.

Though on the other hand, we have been useless defending corners since Moyes left anyway.

It really was.

Billing was left completely unmarked in the centre of the goal, about 7 yards out, he’s about 6’ 3” and obviously decent in the air and there was no one within 2 yards of him.

It is usually flicked on by one of the goalscorer’s teammates though :(

DCL provided the “assist” yesterday.

it will be the end of him , if he continues to use it without getting it right , the prem is a harsh environment to stick to something that the other teams can exploit.
Mina might improve the system when he gets fit, then again there were three of there players lined up to run in yesterday , it would take some defending to stop them all.
