David Unsworth appreciation thread

The outstanding thing about Unsy is his ability to fashion a team from what he has , set them up to play the way he wants and achieve results. The last three U23s away games have been televised and we won 3-0 at Chelsea, 1-0at Derby and 3-0 at City . In each of those games there were periods when the opposition were the better side, Chelsea and City in particular arguably had the more skilful individual players, we had the better team each time. His strength has always been his ability to put out good defensive sides , even when the player turnover week to week is dramatic as it often is at this level with loans, first team call up etc. His teams do exactly as he asks them too, which is perhaps not unexpected from youngsters trying to progress. What he has also shown over the past two seasons is sound tactical awareness in changing his team around from successfully switching to three at the back mid game , through 4231, and a tactically astute move to 4-4-2 the other night.

Could he replicate this at PL level with stubborn internationals to meld to his ways ? Who knows. The key for me is just who people think we will get if RK is sacked. We won’t attract top international managers unless somebody has been recently sacked, so we’re likely to go for someone who has proved themselves in the English game with another club either below us or at a similar level , as per our last three managers. The “join us we’re really going places”speech is unlikely to work again, so just who would we get? I don’t know if Unsy would succeed at this level as he’s unproven , but he has enough going for him to give him a chance if we do end up looking for another manager. The alternative is that we end up with someone like Coleman, Howe or Dych who are decent managers but somehow difficult to see them meeting the (unrealistic?) expectations we have.

For me (unless we really pull a rabbit out of the hat and manage to convince a top-class manager such as Ancelotti to come to us now), I'd like to see Unsy take charge until season end on a care-taker basis and go from there. We ain't going to be relegated, we ain't going to win the league, so I fail to see that there is much risk. End of season we can then reassess our options.

Good post and analysis of Unsworth's abilities, I agree with everything you've said. I think you're exactly right if we appoint someone external right now we'll end up with someone like Dyche. I also feel we've got a cracking group of young players who could form the basis of the team and who he would get the best out of. Give him a chance to the end of the season and see how he performs. We can then evaluate.

Us giving unsworth the job is the same as hiring any league one or two manager who is doing well.

Except based on the lower league shield thing , the reserves aren't even at that level as they are mostly struggling against those teams. Sorry but suddenly backing unsworth for the top job we may as well hire Wimbledon manager for all the good it would do us

I have to laugh that Unsworth is seen as the 2nd coming of Christ and when he was playing he was hated more than Klassen and Sandro put together
