Chickens have come home to roost this season unfortunately. Can only run from it for so long.
I don’t agree that “mentality” is the issue. We score a lot of late goals, and in fact our whole season has been built on scrappy points won away from home. The spirit in the team is the difference between being mid-table and being Spurs right now.
The problem is the team has too many poor players within it. This is due to poor recruitment and poor squad management through the season. Both are at the feet of the manager.
We don’t buy a right back, so a promising CB in O’Brien has to play there and a fading
Tarkowski plays every minute. Or our best midfielder Garner gets pulled out of that spot to fill in.
We botch the RW signing and
Moyes refuses to try to bring
Dibling along through the year. So when we’re chasing a goal the only attacking player he fancies to bring on is George (who has barely shown more than
Dibling) and so our best attacking player
Ndiaye is moved out of position and neutered.
It also means McNeil, who was supposed to be sold four months ago, starts every game and struggles horribly.
We don’t sign a first team LB and
Moyes refuses to try to bring
Aznou along so the worst player in the league
Mykolenko plays every minute, and costs us points every other week.
We botch the striker signing and expect someone like Barry to play in the exact same way as Beto, when they are completely different players.
Rohl can’t get a look in, Armstrong has disappeared. Alcaraz is thrown the odd bone when he is fit. Gueye plays every single game at 47 years old regardless of form or fitness.
Every little mistake made since July has added up and caused a ripple effect across the pitch. We are now relying on our handful of remaining good players to do it almost single-handedly (
KDH is doing his best on that front) while relying on miraculous late winners and equalisers. It’s not sustainable, and it has flipped.
Either Moyes needs to approach this summer and next season entirely differently, or we’ll need a different manager. Because the same thing will happen if we do the same things again.
