2025/26 David Moyes

A regular higher league placing enables you to attract better players and build a better team that is better placed to win more shiny trophies going forward. Is our aim to be a Wigan or a Portsmouth and win a one-off fluke cup before disappearing into the wilderness, or is it to set ourselves up for sustained success? Because if it’s the second option, then league finishes do matter I’m afraid.

I'd take an FA cup, hell even a league cup win over 2nd in the league.

I'd take a conference league win over runner up in the champions league.

Its substance, winning something, over style. Forget what the hipsters or finance bores tell you, winning trophies is the aim of the game. We've not won one in over 30 years. I tell you what it's depressing when you're looking for modern things for the Mishmash - "ha remember that guy who wiped snot on some fans head" or "jagielka's worldie that got a point at anfield!" - trophies. Actual trophies are what matters.

Mindful this is the Moyes thread though so to link it back to him - Moyes gets a statue at the new stadium if he wins a trophy for Everton. He didn't get it for 4th.

David Moyes' career highlight? I tell you, it's not finishing 4th with Everton.
It's the way you see football but not me. I want Everton to win every game but there is more to life than trophies. An average West Ham team won a third tier trophy big deal. I want us to be a good team and play good football. If the English national team focussed more on performance than results we would produce better players and actually have a better chance of winning something.

Why does it though, A cup win brings you the same and with a Trophy..
the money from getting into Europe gives you more to spend on better players that are attracted to Europe
those better players/squad gives you better chance to move up and stamp your ground in the league..
And it nicely fills an extra space in your trophy cabinet..

Why does a cup not improve your chance at league progression ?

Maybe you should be following Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton then..
Pretty Football, Empty Cabinet, No better in the league then us..

I bet you would quickly change your mind as the tournament progressed..

As it's a Moyes thread..

What if Moyes brought us the Cup..

How’s that worked out for Middlesbrough, Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham, even Newcastle?

A cup win is a great day out that we’d all love and all crave, but let’s stop pretending that it in any way contributes to us becoming a better football team in the long run. If you build a better team then you’re more likely to win more cups, I really don’t understand how this is controversial.

It can, but it's not quite the catalyst it was in the past when our cup wins preceded good league seasons.

Newcastle just completely ballsed up a window, they had this season in there hands and messed up recruitment with total unrest in the squad..

Portsmouth got themselves in financial trouble..

Wigan didn't have the pulling power/money to keep progressing..

3 clubs will always go down, Birmingham hit financial issues once that happened with bad ownership..

Middlesborough are the standout club there and will be back up this season and probably stamp themselves back in the league because of there size.

If a cup win is a fluke because of the "Big Boys" messing up, than what is getting a champions league spot 🤷‍♂️

How many Palace/Newcastle fans look at that Day/Trophy as a Fluke.
if they were reading this thread, they would be laughing at us..

Forget the seriously strange opinions on here for a moment.

What does turning our nose up at a cup tell the players ?
it’s not seriously strange to look back further than last season. I don’t care what their fans think either. You seriously telling me that palace, perennial 12th placers, winning the first cup in their history wasn’t a fluke in comparison with the last 30 years of winners?

You think palace fans are expecting to retain that trophy this year? (I’ll give you a hint, they aren’t, and of the remaining 8 teams in that trophy, 4 of them are currently in the top 6 and none of them are Crystal Palace). And for the carabao cup, surprise surprise, it was 1st vs 2nd, not Newcastle.

Barring a literal handful (probably less) of posters on here, no one is turning their nose up at a trophy. But be realistic. And let’s not pretend that 2 non scab 6 teams winning them last season is the norm.

Why didn’t the cup wins save any of those clubs or make them better?

Would you take a trophy if it meant we were relegated? Like Wigan did, which led to Bobby getting the job after Moyes left.

Don’t agree.

I agree it’s the biggie, but it’s not the only one that matters. They all matter.
Before Roger Bannister, people tried for years to break the 4min mile
Once he did it - and showed it could be done

40 people did it in 18months!

3 guys did it in the same race on the 28th May 1955

We win a cup - it could be our Roger Bannister moment

Palace are currently sat in 14th. 2 places lower than where they finished last season.

Newcastle are 12th. 7 places lower.

Hardly stamping their ground on the league.

Not exactly a solid argument based on the most recent winners which is all you want to look at.

Mate, if that's the way you want to look at football then fair play, that's your choice..

I couldn't disagree more, everything is about the future for us now..
1 doesn't have to come without the other..
