2025/26 David Moyes

Is 4th, 5th and 6th mid-table?
When I'm discussing mid-table I'm talking about the clubs that are outside of the traditional clubs qualifying for CL each season and the clubs battling for relegation each season. It's just quicker and easier to say mid-table than that. I understand though if you want to be really precise then mid-table would be 8th-12th. My point largely being that he's not in the tiers of the top level of manager but he's at the top of the level below it. I just don't think with his trophy cabinet you can put him in the top bracket.

Have to give Davey credit for his management and utilisation of McNeil tbf, I wouldn’t have put him anywhere near the squad, but he did ok against Newcastle and well last night, against an abject Burnley. Fair play to Dwight and Davey.

Branthwaite at cb completely changes the team, imagine if Moyes would have had him available for more games? Removing Keane also helps like!

Moyes can still infuriate me with his tactics and stubbornness, especially on subs, which again I thought were slow and poor last night, and we actually allowed Burnley to get a bit of a head of steam up.

However, no one can deny the job he’s done since taking over and improving massively on what that total fraud Dyche left him with.

If he could integrate some of the young talent we’ve signed, then it’s an amazing job he’s done.

Will he ever shift his safety first, too cautious approach - highly unlikely, so we perhaps won’t win anything under him, but he was what we needed just when we needed it - even a Moyes sceptic like me can see that.

Would love us to put a few of the big boys noses out of joint at BMD in the coming games, that would be magic.

Onwards and upwards toffees - Europe is STILL there if Dave and the players want it enough.

He's only ever managed one club with a genuine expectation to finish top 4 and that was for a very short period so I don't think that's a fair comment.

To be fair you would be hoping Everton win at home to a relegation condemned side with an injury crisis, and even beating a Newcastle side deep into a losing run at home, but that’s not the point when there’s narratives to be fulfilled and vendettas collected lads.
You’re playing on both sides’ anger like a fiddle.

Bravo, young man… bravo 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼

In what universe is 4/5/6 midtable?

There's a reason why that is though, as he isn't a top level manager. It's not an offence to be the best of the tier below that. That's still a good manager.

Crap team selection and hideously unambitious use of subs against the current worst team in the league, playing worse than I can recall seeing them play at any other point this season.

We won at a canter, though, so the man can have his flowers. 6pts from 6 and almost 2 weeks off Everton altogether is the closest to bliss it gets round these parts, so I defo CBA moaning about him until the next abject home performance.

My main gripe with Moyes was him playing Branthwaite at left back and Keane at centre back. Whilst Keane has objectively been very good on the whole this season, Tarkowski and Branthwaite are better centre backs and the best pairing. It's harsh but a manager is paid to make decisions and since leaving out Keane and in my view, played his best centre back partnership in Branthwate and Tarkowski, Everton have won back to back games and the defence has just looked so much more balanced. Another reason why Branthwaite has to play centre back is that Mykolenko plays to a higher level as well. I understand that it's difficult as you don't want to send the wrong message to the players in the squad that you can play to a high level over a long period of time yet as soon as the supposed first choice players are available again, they are dumped out of the starting eleven. But Branthwaite and Tarkowski as a pair are arguably only behind Gabriel and Saliba as the best centre back partnership in the premier league over the past 18 months so you simply have to play your strongest hand. Plus he can bring in Keane for Tarkowski and rest him at times and if Branthwaite needs a rest then play O'Brien in his place for a bit more pace. The Tarkowski and Keane partnership restricts the team in the sense that neither has pace so the recovery defence suffers as a result and the team has not had the option to play higher up the pitch. Branthwaite and O'Brien on paper looks to have a lot of potential as an amazing pairing but at this time it's still Branthwaite and Tarkowski for me. Keane would be starting in other sides in the top 10 this season - he's just unfortunate to be up against one of the best centre back pairings in the league. Suck it up and keep playing well.

I have other gripes like why haven't Aznou and Dibling at least been given a run of games at left back and right wing respectively and why has he not played Dewsbury-Hall deeper as more of a midfield three where he would get more touches, the full backs need to be upgraded/modernised but ultimately, it was Branthwaite not playing at centre back that was sooooo frustrating to watch.

Moyes has always been overly cautious with his subs. This will never change just the way he is. Frustrating.

When players are selected in their best/correct positions then the style of play kind of sorts itself out as we saw last night albeit against poor opposition. Ancelloti is a master at this - it's not rocket science yet so many managers tie themselves in knots over this when it's so unnecessary!

I think those 2 VAR disallowed goals against Brentford broke their spirits, which is understandable.
Yeah, that's the most reasonable shout. They haven't been objectively good, but at least they've showed a bit of fight here and there (albeit usually once the horse has bolted). I was very surprised at how little they actually tried to do last night.

Don't get me wrong, like, you can only beat what's in front of you but I wouldn't be declaring a definitive end to the Hilly Dicko Hoodoo just yet.
