2025/26 David Moyes

Acid test for Moyes well there's 2. Matching the home performances with away ones and does he keep OBrien in at centre half?
Ndiaye and Gueye will come back in too.

Lets be honest thats not going to happen as if it did we'd be challenging just outside for the title and 100% for the Champions league.
Everton are currently level with Man City on away points. 17. The home points are the difference. 25 compared to 15. But we cant play like Man City at home. This is where dropping over 100m on the likes of Semenyo and Reijnders compared to 9m and 12m on Iroegbunam and alcaraz is the difference.
Its not to say we dont have a go at it at home. But its not the biggest surprise in the world that we havent got that top drawer quality to do it. Its a very different set up to the away games. Grit versus guile.
This time last year Moyes took over a team and club on its arse in terms of results. A year later we're pulling in more points on the road than half a billion pound liverpool and 800m squad Chelsea.
Adding that bit of quality is the next step so we can put teams to the sword a bit more at home. Thats got to be the next aim. Over to you recruitment.

That's exactly what Patterson wont want: he's 'fine' if he has a chaperone all game. Ndiaye will track back at times but he wont do that as much as say McNeill or Dibling did.

IMO Patterson steps out again for Leeds.

Yeah well that is always my fear with Patterson. But I think I'm getting to the point where I'd take the hit on Patterson being at right back to keep O'Brien alongside Tarkowski. Whatever you make of Patterson, he's (1) an actual right back and (2) he's been very unlucky with injuries and (3) he's young enough to improve his game and value. And lastly (4) by playing him you're giving him a chance to earn a move to a more suitable club in the summer, assuming he doesn't drastically improve and makes a case to stay.

People keep saying he's "an actual RB"...how? In what way?

RBs dont need to have a winger provide a shield for them all game, and RBs in this day and age are tasked with getting up and down the pitch.

He's nowhere near being an actual RB.

Ndiaye is one of the hardest working wingers in the league. Often to his own detriment at times. It’s why he’s usually knackered by 60 odd minutes.

He wont be sacrificing his own attacking game; that'll be primary not secondary to covering for any RB.

I think Moyes sees that and will act.

With Ndiaye returning at RW - there's no debate to be had. We'd be far too exposed on the right because Ndiaye wouldn't be prepared to do the defensive shift that was foisted upon Dibling and McNeill in recent games - and in any case we'll be expected to come out and play a lot more at home and not sit back in a low block.

Greater defensive nous is the order of the day across the whole of the back four against Leeds. We cant have any passengers.

Hopefully Moyes will now use his subs before the 85th minute now he has had to give some of the rest of the squad some ‘premier league experience’ 🙂

Agree mate, he made us much better since returning and I’m thankful of the work he’s done for us after Dyche, but there are niggles and I won’t ignore them.

I’m hoping we can sneak a European place as well though, the way the league is we shouldn’t just settle for mid table.
Have you ever heard the phrase don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good?

I won't say "because that's his position" because I know that's not what you mean. So I'll purely keep this to what we get out of him vs O'Brien.

Pros: He can stick a better ball in, overlaps better and I think our shape in possession looks a lot better when he's playing as he naturally knows where to be.

Cons: He is very suspect for letting his man get inside if they make a run on his outside, also his awareness of his man at the far post is dodgy when a cross comes in from our left.

My solution (short of a new RB): as soon as we can we have to get Garner back in that RB position. Garner has proven he's the best RB at the club as well as one of our best CMs. When we get Gueye and KDH back in tandem Garner becomes best deployed offering us a real option as a FB who can both attack an defend.

Yeah I see the Garner argument. It would be a shame for him though, he's came on leaps and bounds in the last year and actually looks like a leader out there for us. I think one of reason's he's flourished is because he's been given more responsibility in the midfield. But yeah, hopefully we just sign a right back this window for everyone's sanity!

It just means pursuing an unachievable or unrealistic standard often results in a worse outcome than pursuing an achievable and realistic standard. I.e. sacking a proven competent manager because of certain perceived flaws in the pursuit of a better manager may end up on worse results.
Understand that, thank you.

Btw I am categorically not calling for Moyes to be sacked.

Won’t stop me calling out the niggles though! 😜
