2025/26 David Moyes

McNeil was atrocious tonight and does not deserve his place in the team.
Moyes definitely has his favourites. Just like Dyche. Dibling has a bad half and he’s hauled off and dropped. McNeil is poor every game and keeps getting picked.
O’Brien plays well at centre back, keeps a clean sheet, but is shoehorned in at right back again to get Keane back in the team.

He's not going to get sacked, and we're not going to get relegated, but we're not going to qualify for any European competitions and we're not going to win the FA Cup. It is and always has been an in between year, one that will hopefully get us to next season in a position to make a proper step forward.

We're also struggling right now because we're missing half our starting XI through injury and international duties. The squad is thin and poor and while his selections and in-game management have not been good, he's not overwhelmed with options.

But.

Given both of those factors above, and given how everybody KNEW it was a development season, and KNEW the AFCON was coming, and KNEW injuries would come at the busiest part of the season, the refusal and inability to develop and integrate young players in the squad has been the biggest disappointment of the season by far. The management of the squad this season has been done with absolutely zero thought of the future, which is considerably more important than anything that could possibly happen this season.

We're dropping points now because we didn't prepare for this stage of the season earlier, and we will be a poorer side next season than we could have been for the same reason. Those are all David Moyes decisions, and are the exact things people were worried about when he was reappointed. He has done a very good job in getting the team and helping the club back to this position from where it was 12 months ago. But the challenge for the ownership will be at what point the promise of the future is considered over the fears of the past.

Good post about the squad development. I think Moyes has deluded himself into thinking we can somehow drag ourselves into Europe, but we're far too inconsistent. Problem is the table keeps giving him hope. Even now you look at the table and see Brentford in 5th and Newcastle from nowhere up to 6th.

The fact he not only plays McNeill, but also plays him out of position drives me potty. Asking Dwight McNeill to play right wing or number 10 is like asking a squirrel to calculate the required exit velocity required to get a rocket to the moon.

Playing JOB right back also winds me up. It makes us much worse in 3 positions. Even if Patto isn't as good a RB as Jake, at least his inclusion makes 2 other positions better. Playing Garner RB makes 3 positions better and one marginally weaker. It's beyond me how a manager who supposedly plays the percentages doesn't understand what the percentages actually are. Maybe a squirrel could assist. Or Dwight McNeill.

Moyes doesn't have a squad but he also doesn't have the game management to see that HE needed to change that game and not allow teams to take the advantage.

Armstrong introduction was a clear highlight that Rohl is miles away from first team.

McNeil continuation is a lazy choice when he hasn't impacted any game he has appeared. Doesn't deserve game time, injuries or players away.

What do Dibling need to do and why hasn't the manager coached him to improve?

Complete lack of width with no crosses or creativity will kill him and lose v Sunderland it will arrive quicker than he thinks

I didn’t suggest otherwise. I’m responding specifically to a post saying they can’t understand why he’s become a favourite. He hasn’t, obviously, he’s just been picked ahead of another option who also hasn’t been very good. Personally I’d be picking dibling purely for the long term benefit but the reason he’s not been picked isn’t because McNeil is moyes’s favourite.

The way he falls over himself to put a positive spin on everything. Even when we win it winds me up. He could just ask normal questions and no one would bat an eyelid.

I know, it goes through me to be honest. Awful thing to say as Hes a young lad , I can’t help it tho, should learn to be a bit pragmatic and not lay it on thick.

If he loses on Saturday…he should be removed, as the season is over

What is the point of keeping for a few more months when we know he’s gone, the players know and very likely TFG

I think people have got to think about how far we've come in a year and relax on the get rid of him shouts. This season is frustrating but it's the nature of being a mid table side and a lot better than being down at the bottom.

If the time comes that gives us an opportunity to kick on and challenge at the top with an elite manager then do it. Let's not just jump the gun and put someone in charge who isn't going to improve where we are now.
