Daily Mail rag puts the boot into Martinez, the night before the derby

I agree about how surrendering the lead impacts confidence, really hit us in the Spurs game for example. But think the fitness part was only true early on in the season, there were several games just after that we were the better team after the 75 minute mark - Man Utd and Liverpool for example. And recently despite being down to 10 men for an hour imo our fitness was great against West Ham. In both Man City games I thought we finished the stronger team as we did versus Crystal Palace last weekend.

Players coming back too soon in their recovery is a different issue and one that has definitely hit us hard but haven't noticed a persistant problem with late game fitness, especially not recently.

Agree completely with this. Barry is a great example. Think he started the season alright, got injured at Sunderland, and then had to be rushed back at Spurs because McCarthy got injured, and he looked terrible for weeks. More than likely because he wasnt ready to come back, but we were desperate and we've had to just go with it. He looks like he's getting through it now, and has been much improved since probably the West Ham first game. Likewise Coleman in the first half of the season as he was in and out with injuries, and Mirallas and Lukaku were slow starters after the World Cup. Like you say, I think the particular issue with players' fitness (and has likely contributed to a lot of the injuries too) is mainly down to injured players having to come back when they're not 100% because we dont have the squad to cope.

Anyway, probably saying stuff thats already been said, but what a pile of tripe that article is. The things with message boards like this place and Twitter is that we dont have any inside info for the most part. We go off little titbits and rumours we've heard, have no idea really if they're true, and basically have to decide which side of the story we believe. Like the Distin fallout. Was he really told by Martinez to take some time off to get his form back, or did he react like a spoilt child at criticism for his performance and go AWOL? We make our own mind up.

But thats where journalists are supposed to differ from us. They are supposed to have the contacts to actually tell the truth, yet that article could have just as easily have been written by anyone of us on here, because its got about as much 'exclusive info' as 99% of us have got. There isnt a single attributed quote, its utterly contradictory (saying players hate Martinez because he's too soft, then they hate him fo doing double training sessions...make your mind up?) and it is basically pure speculation. Probably the entire amount of research the silly berk did amounted to trawling the likes of here and Toffeeweb and Twitter for some juicy rumours, then passing them off as vague fact.

Im not saying everything in it isnt true, I believe one or two bits of it, but I believed them when I read them on here weeks ago too. Putting out what is basically a baseless character assassination and hatchet job the night before the Derby, while every other media outlet is spending their coverage of the game licking Stevie Me's ring, is nothing but an agenda. The timing of that is obvious. We won last week, and performances have been much improved lately, so why now? Why not at the height of the crisis after we lost 4 in a row? Or the day after the penalty row in the West Brom game? Were all these nameless sources not quite so forthcoming then?

"Qualified observers say....".

Ha ha ha ha.

I think you're doing a disservice in your use of the term "JOURNALIST" there dave.
