Cycling thread

It's going to be a classic tomorrow. Most beautiful race of the year, revisiting the origins of cycling, when the entire races (often more than 300k) were solely ridden on dirt & cobbled roads...

I'm still regretting last years edition was cancelled (november 8), weather was supremely bad.

Great race from Lizzie Deignan, crushed it from 80k out solo. Historic win.
Vos looked awesome on the cobbles when she attacked to chase, cut 40 secs off with apparent ease. But that was it, Deignan too strong to catch.

Some heavy falls, be chaotic scenes if rain keeps up tomorrow.
Think she had quite a bit of help from the motorbikes in front of her. When they were removed, Deignan held the gap pretty steady. Awesome ride though from Deignan. Any time you attack from that far out to win solo is awesome as far as I'm concerned.

Anybody watched the race today? What a spectacle that was.
Best race I've seen in a long time, phenomenal riding. vdP back with panache but Moscon prob the strongest man out there today.

Did you watch it on eurosport? Commentator (Dan Lloyd I think) reckoned too much pressure on Moscon's second bike and it looked that way after the change. Really looked like he could take it home I thought.

Who am I to argue with Dan? Lower pressure is important, but fatigue is also a factor. If you're fresh, you can correct & you don't fall.
Moscon was really really unlucky + the bike change was way too slow. Where was the Ineos-car? Five minutes before Servais Knaven (driver of said car) was giving it a thumbs up, but when his man needed him, he wasn't there.

Strongest man in my opinion was the young lad that came in second. 200k in attack, didn't even seem tired after the race.
Dumbest man in my opinon was Mathieu Van Der Poel: attacking so viciously from 95k... I was shouting at the telly... If he played his cards right, waited voor Mons-en-Pevele, he probably would've won. At least he would have had more in a sprint.
Colbrelli was the smartest. He let Mathieu VDP do all the work in the chase & rode a magnificent sprint. Deserved winner obviously.

What an excellent race that was. Roll on Lombardia!

Just looking for some advice from anyone mechanically minded. Basically I've been doing up an old bike for the winter. It has cheap campagnolo (xenon). It's 9 speed and has a triple on the front. My left hand shifter snapped (cheap plastic) and I'm trying to find a replacement, but I have no idea where to look. Are other brands potentially compatible or would I have to go exact like for like?

You can't mix different shifters / derailleur combinations from shimano / sram / campy due to different cable pull ratios.
I say can't - on a front der for a winter bike you might get it close enough, you might not even use the front shifter all that much.

Depending on what you are using it for, you could just put a single narrow / wide chainring on the front for not much money. Is the damaged shifter an integrated one with the brake, or separate, ie do you need a new rear brake as well?
NW retains the chain no problem, but obv you have a restricted set of gears and if it's old school cassette at the back it might make hills difficult.

I was planning on using it for longish winter rides so access to all three chain rings would be required.

It's a separate lever but Im not entirely sure it could be replaced. It doesn't look like the remaining bit could be easily removed.

The derailleur is actually shimano, I think my old LBS chucked it on years ago and it somehow worked. Does it matter what speed the shifters are eg 8/9/10 as long as I make sure it's a triple left hand shifter?

You should be good for the front - I bet there are still differences in cable pull between older and newer shifters, even within a brand, but it will likely be slight. If you've already been using shimano / campag mix on the front then I'd just look to get a cheap Left hand triple shimano shifter off ebay - There are loads of doubles available secondhand as people upgrade drivetrains all the time . I'd guess triples are less common nowadays but should be some to look at.

Mine did the same on my Bianchi, and no Bike shop could source it.

I got mine off amazon

Condor cycles are pretty good for Campag

Some buzz recently on the hour record - Dan Bigham recently broke Wiggins UK record doing 54.7k (world record by Victor Campanaerts is 55.1k) and Joss Lowden broke the women's hour with 48.4k. Now Alex Dowsett is having a crack next month on the fastest velodrome in the world in Mexico at altitude.

They're all scrambling to get their names in the record books before Ganna puts it out of sight for a generation - the Big Man has expressed an interest in tackling it next year.

Massive achievement from Bigham as he's not a WT rider - he's obv exceptional but he's not in the same athlete class as someone like Wiggins. He's just a complete aero technician.
