Cycling thread

My dad was a racer. Time trialing was his thing.

Always loved cycling but I'm a table tennis player not a cyclist.

He has passd but
left me with a lovely bike.

I remember in the day Reynolds 531 tubing was the best you could get on a bike frame but I'm guessing things have moved on a bit!

Used to be a very British thing. Up and down a dual carriageway.

Big cross race on the 26th, van der Poel back to take on Wout van Aert.
Wout came back 3 weeks or so ago, his last cross race being in Jan, had a cold, and absolutely flayed the field - won by minutes.

vdP has been injured and is saying he's not sure if he has the legs to go with Wout. Translation = my attack on lap2 will crush all life on earth.
Pidcock also back saying he's not content to just come third to those two, so could be a savage race.

Track does favour WvA though. Dendermonde where he has been dominant in the past. So a legit favourite.

Seems like Pogacar is riding practically everything next year. MSR, Flanders, Liege, Tour, Vuelta, Worlds, Lombardia, with a few chippers thrown in.
Pogacar won a round of the Slovenian cyclocross championship today in Ljubljana - man for all seasons.

WvA was in charge today at Dendermonde - vdP looked in good condition first half but van Aert put everyone away second half. Pidcock top ten but didn't feature at the sharp end.
They go again tomorrow at Zolder.

Wout won his seventh cross today - no one can live with him. It was actually close today, though - Pidcock capitalised on a crash that saw Wout needing to change his shoes in the pits, so lost quite a bit of time. Led till the last lap until Wout dropped the hammer on the hardest part of the course. If Wout takes this form into the classics season he will slay everyone- no one is stronger.

It's a pity from the pure cross perspective that prime vdP v vA is now probably over. Because they are both selective in what they race, entering the season late, it's hit and miss as to whether they're both on top form. Last two years Wout has been off the pace for various reasons, and this year vdP is struggling with injury. As dominant as vdP has been head to head I'm not sure he could take on this version of Wout, maybe on a fast course he would have the edge but on the proper cross Wout looks unstoppable.

It's largely MVDP's own fault. Time after time he ignored doctor's advice on rest and recuperation.
He doesn't listen. He didn't listen when they told him there wouldn't be plank on the MTB Olympic course, he didn't listen when they told him to skip the WC and Paris-Roubaix. He didn't listen when they told him not to train like a maniac...

Now the spring classics are in danger.

Pidcock heavy favorite now for the WC cyclocross. He's getting better and better. Although I do think he's in Flanders too much, dreaming of victory in the spring classics. Somebody with his body and talent should be aiming at the tour...

Do you think Pidcock is good enough to take on Pojacar at the Giro , Tour or Vuelta?
Can't see it myself

Pidcock definitely in Flanders too much right now, as I believe he is skipping the national champs tomorrow. I guess covid is in the picture, and athletes have to be more careful with their travel.
Welsh rider Zoe Backstedt - teenage phenom, massive all round cycling talent, has just had to pull out of the Nats with a positive covid test. Means she will prob miss the worlds where she was a lock for the junior title (took one minute out of the field in the opening lap in a recent Belgian junior race).

Pidcock will be the strongest rider at the world champs but he's not head and shoulders above Iserbyt, Toon Aerts and co - mistakes happen all the time in cross so it could be a close race.

Sanne Cant won her thirteenth national title in Belgium today - congrats to a great rider and pure crosser. She's been overtaken in recent years by 4 or 5 Dutch riders, she's actually younger than Lucinda Brand but she can't seem to get on terms nowadays. Belgian cross is inexplicably weak on the women's side - something going wrong there at grassroots level as the disparity is ridiculous.
