Cycling thread

Getting stuck into some zwift racing here - got a team time trial up this evening. It's good stuff and pretty hard I have to say - there is some skill in learning the game engine and getting in the draft, but basically there's no relief you can get on technique or psychology compared to real racing. So it's just power, power, and more power.

It's knee deep in fantasists pushing 4-5 W/Kg for an hour in the wrong category - although they are apparently just pushing out anti-sandbagging measures to sort this. Funny vid here of Alex Dowsett getting dropped out of the lead group in a zwift ride. World Tour pro and elite tester can't keep up with Big Daz and his mates from the local crit scene.

Oh that looks absolutely ace. Once the market has normalised and I can actually go to a shop for the bike and the EPO I'm well doing this

Sorry for bombing a decent cycle thread, and I'm a complete noob when it comes to bikes- I am desperate to cut down a few pounds (stone tbh), improve my fitness and was thinking of picking up a hybrid bike. The second hand market is absolutely obliterated. Is this a decent allrounder till I decide if I can be arsed with a cycling commute, like bombing around mild trails (be about 10 miles a day) https://www.decathlon.co.uk/900-hybrid-bike-water-green-id_8578872.html

Decathlon v reliable for entry level bikes in general - some great value for money stuff in there, esp their triban road range.

That particular one I am not sure - it's prob fine for what you want to just get started. The cheap suspension fork is not a feature as they are bad, and there's no need for one in the first place on a hybrid IMO. But it is a bike, not a bike-shaped object (BSO) that are everywhere at the min as folk retrieve them from the back of the garage.

Have you looked at teh cycle to work scheme - you can get something good and save a bit of money, but (and it's a big but) you're locked in to owning the bike for a fair while. You can't punt it on after three months if you end up not liking it.

Today should have been the start of the Giro, my favourite stage race of the year. Some classics over the years, so do please share any memorable stages from the past. I'll start from the memorable 2010 edition, when you could choose from half a dozen stages, but the mudbath in Tuscany is my personal favourite, as this stage really gave birth to the Strada Bianchi classic.

Hi folks , sorry for the intrusion as I’m a runner. By pure chance I came across a book “ Core Advantage” by cyclist Tom Danielson and therapist Alison Westfahl. Although it’s aimed at giving cyclists core strength “ for the winning edge”, it’s an excellent book and I’m now putting together a programme specifically for my running, omitting any cycling specific exercises but the majority are equally applicable for running core strength.
So , has anybody come across this book and have any experience in using it? Cheers.

I haven't but will definitely take a look at it (for both my cycling and running)!

Mentioned in the keeping active thread but the amount my general fitness has improved in the last month since I started cycling is really great.

I've had the weekend off from it. Was far too hungover on Saturday morning and it was a bit horrid here this afternoon, so did a run instead like yesterday - but I'm easily hitting pace I hadn't in a while and that I was struggling to get to before cycling due to constant niggling injuries.

Really chuffed I've got into cycling and a few of my mates have too, so we're all on strava and it's a bit of fun. Not bothered about competing for the top goals or anything, just good to have some aims with a bit of competition!

Only worry for me is when the roads do get back to normal as i'm very wary of it, but I'm pretty confident at the moment so sure it'll be fine.

Been zwifting a lot this past month, dishing the watts like they're going out of style tbh. Thinking of taking the timetrial bike out for a spin this week if we have a nice evening and running it over the local ten course - be good to see if the outside legs are still there.

Are you racing on Zwift?
Crushing the B crits Bruce.
Also doing the team time trials every thurs which are a lot of fun, boss format, but we're still figuring out how to ride them well. Pretty strong bunch of riders IRL but we've not managed to translate that to the game yet.

What are you doing yourself?

I do the longer weekend rides, and the odd Kiss at base group rides. More of a diesel so need time to get up to speed. It's noticeably faster since lockdown has swelled the numbers.

Have you done the Alpe? I've barely done any riding around the world on my own but should try that climb.

Be interested to see the longevity of the racing - really enjoying it right now but wonder about the shelf life, if the one-dimensionality eventually gets boring. Did a time trial on it the other week with a friend who is a v strong tester IRL, knows his 20 min power to the Watt and can deliver it reliably. Does the event at 350W I think for a good time and that's basically it - there is no real point in repeating this other than for the workout. He's well trained, a good weight, so the time can't really be improved.

Although being a purebreed tester he was immediately talking about levelling up to get some more aero e-kit :)
