Cycling thread

I saw L Baines on it a few weeks ago but thought little of it.
When I saw him today it looked like he was out with one of his kids so it could be him or his kid on it. Class thing about Baines is how laid back he is so there aren't loads of stories about what him and his family get up to.

As for Big Vic, it could be anyone. But if you could make up a name, would you pick him. Again, could be. Only picture on there for Anichebe is an expensive looking road bike next to what looks like a 4x4 with black alloys.

There is no way I should be quicker than him though. Not if he's on that road bike and I'm on a fairly entry level hybrid!
Reckon Big Vic would rage the Watts - KOMs left right and centre.

Baines probably had to hide himself after @davek figured out where he lived.

Went up the Alpe a couple of times this week on zwift - first time went steady to see how the land lies, then a hard effort today at 56 and a half mins. Was in a race so prob got a min or two from that but felt close to my limit.
Brilliantly crafted route - I don't tend to find the zwift environment all that engaging as far as the actual roads and world goes, but the Alpe feels very well put together.

Think @BlueToff has been found as well

Oh I've got lycra now and everything Bruce, I'm fully, fully into it! Using one of my dad's mate's old roadbikes now - a Jamis.

Got the cleat pedals for the Hybrid and was clocking up some really good times on that but just had a week on the Jamis now too.

Loving it.

Just also in the process of preparing to move house and then work picking back up so it has all being a bit hectic!

Are Sram shifters compatible with a shimano group set? Basically I've been upgrading my bike slowly and I still have Tiagra shifters. The shifting itself doesn't bother me at all, but they're the type where the gear cable pokes out of the side of the shifter instead of running down the handlebars. Basically I want to swap them with 105s + but they seem ridiculously expensive. Even a used set on eBay are going for around £90.

No, not as far as I know. Different cable pull ratios, so a shimano shifter needs to be matched with a shimano rear mech, and sram with sram.

Cassettes, chains, cranks and chainrings can be mixed and matched with 1 or 2 exceptions.

STI shifters are always an expensive part of the build. There's always loads available secondhand, as people upgrade, or switch to hydraulic disks, but 90 quid used sounds par for the course.

I'm not sure if shameless self promotion is allowed on here, but after talking to a few agents and publishers about this project last year and getting knocked back, it wouldn't go away so I'm attempting to crowdfund writing the first English language book about Frank Vandenbroucke. You can download a sample chapter for your phone or kindle here

Amazon product ASIN B08B3L4LW8
and you can order in advance via kickstarter (and pay for me to write it full time) here

Happy to answer questions about it also.

GL disgruntledgoat. Would have thought that's a great story to be told in the UK or US - outside of hardcore roadies I don't think many UK cyclists followed Classics racing at all in those days. I was 100% mountain biking then and certainly didn't, just watched the Tour de France now and again, so didn't know anything about VdB really.
Get the sense it's different now that things are more connected, and casual fans will have heard of Flanders, LBL etc

It's such a good story. I did some work with De Vlaeminck last year as well because he isn't as known as he should be but he pulled the plug on it. Which is just as well as I was finding out some proper rum stuff about him. But the VDB story is so crazy and so good that I can't believe it hasn't been done before. I remember reading the Matt Rendell Pantani book when it came out and thinking that somebody should do one for Frank... As it turns out Andy McGrath who edits Rouleur was working on one (which is why my discussions with publishers got canned) but it was supposed to be out by now and with some of my contacts I'm convinced I can do it better. A lot of the guys I asked about this last year hadn't heard from him at all. Like I said, it's an idea that wouldn't leave me alone so I'm trying to get it off the ground now.

Alex always does the Maratona. Strong as an ox. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Froome being heavily linked with a move to Israel startup nation now, few articles in the mainstream press. Cant see that outfit carrying much of a GT threat even with Froome in the chair, so must be all about getting a massive name on board to build profile.
