Ineos rider Vasil Kiryienka has had to call it a day with a cardiac anomaly - 38 yo though so has had a good run. Absolute iron hard domestique, who won a few grand tour stages himself, and was the world TT champion in 2015. Good health to him away from pro-cycling.

Ideal domestique in many ways. A world class time trialist, who was capable of getting okay GC results (16th and 25th in the Vuelta and Giro respectively). He's had a cracking career all things considered.

van der Poel slayed the cyclocross today - rode the entire field off his wheel start to finish.
There was a great race behind him, though, Tom Pidcock in the mix with five Belgian hardmen - attacked third lap and blew them all up. Toon Aerts came back at him but he kept the gap to take silver. Best cyclocross result in history for a British male rider - huge ride.

The GOAT, though:

I followed a family of cyclists today. Dad, Mum and son all had mud sprayed on their backs as they had no mudguards. In front was their daughter, completely clean and with short mudguards on her bike. Can someone tell me why people ride bikes without short mudguards .....

I didn't realise until reading the Guardian piece on him that Pidcock is quite so small. He's even shorter than me (and a few kilos lighter!). Obviously doesn't seem to affect him in CX, but does that mark him out as a climber on the road? I thought Remco was small, but Pidcock takes it to a new level. Both seem strong time trialists, so they must have some raw power despite their diminutive stature.

Would love to know why he walked away from Sven Nys and Telenet.

*shrug no idea to be honest

Well, exactly. It's one of the more remarkable things about his career to date. He was handpicked by probably the greatest Cross rider of all time and given a long term deal on his team, a way into the biggest races with a support staff who know the ins and outs of the scene and walked away from it after one year to start his own team.

Never understood why he would want to take all that pressure on himself and would like to see somebody ask the question at some point. Even over here.

Think those numbers must have been from when he was a junior, no way is he 5 foot 2. He's a smallish bloke but not a pixie, reckon about 5' 6'' from seeing him ride the nationals.
He's certainly got the build for GT climbing and the power is on tap. Be quite something if he can mix it with the likes of Remco and Bernal who both look set to dominate.
