WC cyclocross race at the weekend was one for the ages - brutal throwdown between Toon Aerts and WvdP at Namur (one of the hardest courses and conditions were very testing - all riders said the cold was savage, series leader Eli Iserbyt retired with hypothermia symptoms). Aerts beat vdP last week to end his year long win of victories, so was carrying serious form into the race.
British rider Tom Pidcock put in an exceptional ride - comfortably third and heading to the podium but a last lap crash broke his seat and meant he got passed. Still shows he's amongst the best of the best right now in this discipline.

It's Carlton Kirby mainly isn't it? Easy to remember nickname that he blurts out repeatedly (usually whilst misidentifying everyone else)

Yeah. Dreadful commentator. I used to like David Harmon but, y'know.

It's a pity cos Kelly is one of the best analysts in any language and Wiggins is shaping up well, n'all.

I happened to cycle for a bit with Phil Liggett on Zwift the other day. It wasn't clear if he had his suitcase of courage with him.

I cannot stand Phil Ligget. Nice guy I'm sure, but his whole shilling for Armstrong (to the extent of claiming people threatened him/tried to bribe him into saying Lance cheated) for years in the face of all evidence, as well as the fact that he never seemed to understand what was happening in a race even after 40 years experience makes him unlistenable.

I have a DVD he did of Simoni winning the Giro in 2003 where he's chatting over a shot of Gibo's rest day ride: "Without a sign of effort on his face he spins the pedals and the bike accelerates to 60 kilometres an hour"... He;s in the little ring. And he weighs 50kg.

So Phil can take those pistons he calls legs and get tae.

Have you seen any of the lanterne rouge's stuff on youtube? Youngish Australian bloke who is putting out superb (IMHO) road race analyses - seems to have gotten quite popular over the last year.

I have, and agree that it's interesting stuff.

Was at the cyclocross nationals this weekend in Shrewsbury - did the vets race yesterday (40 - 50 yo) and watched the senior men today. Good hard course with a lot of short running sections, but nothing sustained which was good. Was gridded right at the back of 100 blokes, so it was hard to bring the war face when you're basically just there to look at the scenery. Did my best in any case and moved up some places - if I managed 80something I'll be pleased.

Tom Pidcock was in a different time zone today - just rode away from the field and made a testing course look trivial. I thought he might not be focussed on this race as the worlds at the end of the month are were it is at for him, but either way he slayed it. The next four riders were all young guys who race in Belgium and were a class above the main field. Respect to the bloke who won my race on the Sat, and raced again today and finished tenth in his 40s - that is a talented bike rider.

In cross they hook lapped riders out of the race using something called the 80% rule - so the leaders aren't disadvantaged by having lapped riders on the racing line. (Fortunately for me they don't apply it to vets races, just UCI level ones). It meant just 15 out of nearly 70 riders finished today's race, such was the pace of Pidcock. It's quite harsh - really strong lads at an amateur level just getting 25 mins racing in, as a world level pro is just a different dimension of speed.

Cyclocross world champs at the weekend in Switzerland and there looks to be decent coverage on the BBC which is good - some strong UK riders in the mix, as cross goes from strength to strength here. U23 and elite women on Sat, elite men sun.

What is less good is that the parcours is an old airfield and really flat, so it's likely going to be a raging watts battle and there's only one possible winner there - van der poel. Rain is expected so perhaps there will be some surprises, Tom Pidcock probably hoping for a top five given the course. Wout van Aert is back racing after his very bad crash in the TdF time trial - he was second in a cross last weekend and has immense pedigree in the worlds, outside bet for the podium given his condition.

Loads of UK riders in the mix for U23 men, Evie Richards has not been racing too much cross but is a world class rider so could do something in the women's race. Hattie Harnden is racing U23 women and is phenomenally strong - won the senior women's UK national championship at 19 years of age.
