Well he is better than Kenny and holgate, far worse than Coleman. OK as a squad player. But sad fact is we will start next season weaker in RB than we did last year, depressing slightly.

Absolutely nothing wrong with having an opinion about the player, and you're fully entitled to your opinion, which has some merit, but Koeman must feel differently. Personally, even at his age, I would have gone for Zabaletta...a veteran who can still be very useful. I notice that West Ham have gone for him despite having signed Byram(?) last season. I seem to remember Hibbert playing well as a stop gay centre back a couple of times, and as for 'letting us down'...Hibbert was an excellent old school tackler but was not too good going forward, so you're not really comparing like with like comparing him with Coleman. From the beginning to the end of Hibberts career 'the game changed'.

Simple answer for me to a question, what do we need in thecposition. Replacement for Coleman - nope, Genuine first team competition for Coleman - nope not unless were willing to shell out 10-15m for a trippier type whose not gonna come as back up anyway.

So left with we Ned to ensure we have acceptable cover in the position until Coleman returns to fitness, we already have Kenny whose an amazing young talent who just needs game time to develop, we have Holgate who can do a very good defensive job there, we have Browning and Connelly who can both do a ok job in league cup, dead rubber Europa games etc, and we have Davies and Basic who have both shown in sporadic games there that they can stop gap the wingback position ok.

We don't need a bog standard late twenties journeyman arriving, actually we are much weaker depth wise at left back than right back.

LOL he isn't better than either kennyt or holgate mate.

Any team in the league would take those two if we released them on frees, Martina has zero interest after being released at his supposed peak by a mid table side he was 3rd choice at.

Holgate and Kenny the worry is they are targeted by teams looking for our weak /inexperienced link. Martina only marginally better I would say. In any case, if we want to be a side contending for the top then we should be playing experienced proven quality players in all positions, not fielding half a dozen youngsters who may or may not be good. We drop points when we experiment when we could buy in proven quality (though that is not turning out how we would like either ha!) .

This year was ok to play all the youngsters since we had nothing to lose in the league once we had secured Europa.

Yes it's nice to bring up players through the system and occasionally we find a gem. But given the choice I'd prefer spending 20 million + on a proven player for any position!

Holgate holds his own as a full back, especially defensively. He's not great going forward granted but he's still a far superior option to Martina.

Kenny has never looked a worry when I've seen him and never heard a single person whose watched him say they would be worried about him playing for us and being exposed.

Holgate isn't a fullback - but he can do a very good job defensively there

Martina is not very good attacking and is badly suspect defensively and is inferior to both by a mile.

We won't and shouldn't be going out and spending money to bring in a proven quality right back, we already have one of them - just he is injured for a period, we spend big money buying one in then what happens when Coleman returns, we either demote a player who we paid good money for or effectively have to do that to Coleman, you don't bench one of your best players and you don't buy to replace them because of a 4-5 month absence, you rather choose the best options to cover for that absence - which is playing Kenny and should he not be up to it (which he will be up to it) then you have a variety of other options in Holgate, Connely, Browning, Davies, Besic who have all played there before, not even counting that we may very well bring in another defensive/wide player who has the ability to slot in short term at right back and provide additional depth.

We have absolutely massively more important areas of the park we need to address before even remotely thinking about right back
