Nah it's in the bag Tim.
Not necessarily he will run out of support regardless, look at their batting apart from him in their first innings, they're now on a deteriorating pitch and will be even worse, trust me.

You're welcome, keep the faith guys, the game would have been over a lot earlier had we held our catches, we have the best bowlers and they are a one man batting team, we have different batsmen who will step up when they have to, we will stroll this series get yer money on.

Ben Stokes Wow

'Fantastic morning'

Ben Stokes has turned it all around just as it looked for all money that we were headed for a loss, a feat he's managed on more than one occasion before tbf.

He is without doubt England's crucial cog, the part that holds this team together and gives it a better balance, how he'll be missed at Lords and how we missed him last winter in the ashes. On a positive note Rashid has performed admirably well and was used at the right times in this match.

Gideon Haigh's quote about this England test team without Stokes being rather like a table with only three legs was never more true. Chris Woakes is a good player himself but no Stokes.

His batting has been awful recently but class is permanent while form not so, and like all good allrounders he has two strings to his bow, his bowling today provided the killer blow just when needed.

Next it's Lords which really is rapidly turning into a graveyard for England, it's a ground we invariably do badly at and I would expect it to be true to form. England without Stokes are on the back foot anyhow and I suspect really have to go in with a right handed replacement for Malan if its a batsman, they just can't let Ashwin bowl to so many lefthanders again. I think Malan will play although imo that would be a mistake.

Pujara and Jadeja in for India I think, I'm pretty sure i've read Bumrah will not be playing in the first three tests.

I agree with your assessment of the teams. That doesn’t mean that we can’t manage to lose if at all possible. The pathetic batting display once Root threw his wicket away in the first innings and the dolly catch dropped by Malan when Kohli was on 25 nearly did for us.

This test, although won, in many ways was hugely frustrating as its a game we should have won very comfortably indeed, and by a far wider margin. There were so many times we were on the verge of dominance only to be pulled back, somehow grabbing a weaker position instead of seizing the moment. The senseless run out of Root, and Malan dropping a very simple catch early on in Kohli's mammoth effort, which would have made them 100-6, the two most obvious.

As for the second test on Thursday it's at Lords and even when England are right on top of their game and playing extremely well we usually find a way to get hammered at Lords. If we win a series 4-1 you almost know without being told where the loss came, somehow against the odds they have to find a way of reversing such a worrying trend and the right selection would be a good start.

Woakes for Stokes is a given but perhaps the history of Lords where spin is rarely profitable must come into it Therefore the remaining choice would have to be to stick with Malan or pick a preferably right handed replacement. There may too be a place for Jamie Porter if Broad or Anderson are rested, although I would suspect both will play without Stokes in support .

We have to be more clinical, more ruthless and take our chances even if Lords is nearly always a write-off.

As speculated here, England have made two changes for the second test.

Woakes in, is an enforced change for the unavailable Ben Stokes.

Ollie Pope the 20 year old right-hander who has been in such tremendous touch in the county championship for leaders Surrey is also in for Dawid Malan.

Malan had an exceptionally poor game at Edgbaston failing with the bat and dropping three catches, it was thought it may have been his last chance and so it has turned out to be. Malan is not a young prospect and highly unlikely to get another either.

It's a real reward for the Surrey right hander Pope who has scored 694 runs this season at an average of 85.5, and young enough to be one for the future even if it doesn't go to plan at Lords.

Playing so many left handers after Ashwin's performance in this test always looked to be asking for trouble, and i for one am happy they've decided on a change and given the young lad a chance.

It's the worsley cup final today. (the show piece cup final for the Lancashire league). Lowerhouse v Burnley. Early reports of 5000 plus on the game.

That's more than most countries get for a test match now!
