Root showing yet again how appalling he is as a captain. Trying to get batsmen who are playing for the close out hooking in the last 15 minutes. Yes Joe, that was extremely likely. It's not like there's been plenty of movement through the air when the ball was pitched up.

I digress.....

It is not often that the result of a 5 day test match can be put down to one single incident but if we lose this test (as appears likely) then the catch that Malan put down when Kohli was on 21 is that incident.

Yes, what an absolute mare he's had

Another fascinating day, but one where I don't think we did enough.

It was a very good effort by the bowlers in the last session and Curran has had an outstanding match, but I think that last half an hour has swung it India's way.

Unfortunately this England side has a real issue with grabbing their moments. Every day we've had them really on the backfoot but haven't really put the foot on the throat.

It's not impossible for us to win this test even with the ball getting old and only just 84 to get, but India will win if Kohli stays much longer.

We have half a chance if we get Kohli early, he has to start again against fresher bowlers than he faced for the latter part of the day, but England's chances are now very much dependent on achieving the early breakthrough of Kohli's wicket, or it may quickly go away.

Even 50 with 4 wkts left, but no Kohli, would be a very tough ask, as we've seen before in these close situations the nerves hit batsman as well, and often very hard indeed.

Dawid Malan has had at best what could be called a complete shocker of a match, he could hardly have done worse. His place was under severe pressure before the test, and now he's probably looking forward to an extended run of county cricket.

He was at it yet again today ..

From cricinfo

'Anderson to Vijay, 2 runs, dropped, by Malan again! He's had a shocker of a Test. Full outside off, drew the drive from Vijay, well away from his body, it's a thick outside which goes to the right of Malan at second slip but he didn't have to move too far. Bursts through the hands'

Just about the final straw for him, Moeen is surely a better choice even solely as a batsman.

And please get Malan out of the f****** slips now. This is getting absurd'

What a match for Sam Curran, he
has that special something about him and although still raw looks as though he could well be the left armer we've long wanted. His batting was fearless too and showed plenty of promise and a maturity beyond his years, another fine all rounder in the making perhaps.

As far as this game goes, I'd say England have about a 30% chance of pulling it off. If they are to win, they really need two wickets in the first hour.

If India bat out the first hour and add 40-50 runs for the loss of one wicket or less the game is done in my view.

It'll be a very frustrating game to lose, this. I'd say we've been on top for as long as India have, probably a lot longer, but they've just been clinical when it's mattered most, whereas we've, quite literally, dropped the ball.

It wouldn't surprise me if Malan got another game, you know. I really don't agree with it as I think failure is tolerated for far too long in this test team, hence why we make the same mistakes over and over but I can just see it now. 'Its his home ground, one last chance' etc.

The whole test set up is far too comfortable for my liking. Too many players are on easy street and it does my head in. I'm not for one minute advocating a return to the era of one or two test wonders at all, but the pendulum has swung too far in the opposite direction.

England's batting has been papered over by the quality of bowling for many years now at test level.
Need new openers and a couple in the middle order.

Problem is there are not that many suitable candidates.

Also, Anderson and Broad can not go on for ever.

Wow did lancs get beat? That's not good from the position they were in. I had a look at the odds when it was 16-3 and lancs were 1/33 on to win!
Nabi scored 86 in 32 balls. They were 92-5 when he came in. Absolutely smashed Lancs all over the park. Hate seeing Lancs lose, but it was a spectacular innings.

One of the main concerns should be the length of England's innings. Routinely England will bar for 1 day and post in the region of around 230. They have lost the ability to grind out runs and accumulate. Their response to a collapse is to try and attack out of it, it rarely works because you have likes of Stokes/Buttler coming to the crease at 57-5.

The art of batting in a test match seems to be dying.
