Cricket

Southport born Ben Aitchison with a couple of wickets for Debyshire against Notts, including Hameed. Was with Lancs academy but Derby signed him on a short term contract after he impressed playing grade cricket in Australia over the winter. Plays for Formby.

Lancs in deep trouble 76-2 still behind Leicestershire's first innings total by about 10 runs. Obviously a weak side with all the enforced changes but looks as if this is only heading one way.

It is a home game for Lancs too as switched from the original away fixture. With Old Trafford unavailable and Aigburth not being a possible alternative at this short notice. Worcester was the best practical alternative especially with the hotel nearby.

Michael Vaughan reckons England should pick their strongest side in the first test on Wednesday as Pakistan are potentially much better than the West Indies and we won't get away with such a huge tail.

If Stokes can bowl as seems increasingly likely and the wicket is similar to the last two tests at OT, he thinks Crawley for Archer the only change as Broad, Anderson and Woakes have to play giving four seamers and the spinner.

It looks as though it's a straight fight between Anderson Archer and Bess for two places with Crawley looking certain to slot back at number three. Stokes bowled in the nets today and they're now increasingly hopeful he'll be able to play a full part as a fourth seamer.

The temperatures could reach 27C on Friday and it looks to be hot and dry weather throughout the majority of the five days with a possibility of showers only on the first morning. Such conditions would almost certainly play into Bess' hands and four seamers and a spinner looks more likely. It possibly then means a straight choice between Anderson or Archer, with a potentially harder drier wicket meaning it's far more condusive to the extra pace and bounce than the last two tests which may mean Anderson misses out.

I see it as Archer or Anderson missing out for Crawley.

For me I'd drop Bess. Anderson averages under 20 in the last 25 home tests or whatever.

Play your best bowlers for me. Crawley for Bess for me.

Hot and dry usually means a harder bounce and completely different conditions. Pakistan are apparently thinking two spinners may be needed, I'm thinking England will almost certainly think four seamers and a spinner covers more options and the better balance.

I personally wouldn't mind leaving Bess out if similar conditions to the last two tests, but the forecast is indicating that's not the case. A harder wicket and drier conditions may well come into their thinking on selection, it's bound to actually

Sounds like we need Archer and maybe Wood!

I think they may be wary of playing both but conditions could make them consider it. I think Broad definitely plays and probably Woakes.

It's all a guessing game atm.

Yes for sure. At this stage I wouldn't drop Anderson or Broad. In these conditions they are the best in the world. You work back from that. I can see the need for another batsman and Woakes deserves to play. At this stage, in England with 5 bowlers + Root I'm not sure we need a spinner, irrespective of conditions, so Bess drops out. Thats the way I go, Archer plays over Wood and maybe they get rotated next game.

The one left field shout, is Curran plays for Bess.

Trott selected as new batting coach for England, i really like that tbf, he was a proper rock that we need to build good scores, perfect for the top 4 including joe root who keeps getting out in stupid ways

We have to play our best side against Pakistan, we can't repeat our usual habit of losing the first test no matter how bad the opposition.

They've got a heck of a lot more experience and know how than the Windies, especially in the batting with the likes of Babar Azam and Azhar Ali who have scored big runs around the world. Babar also played for Somerset and knows our conditions.

Their bowling line up is pretty exciting too, Mohammed Abbas is their English type seamer or banker if you like, then there's Naseem Shah 17 years old who bowls lightening bolts and is quick - last year taking a hat-trick against Bangladesh at age 16. Shaheen Shah Afridi is a left arm pace merchant and England tend to struggle with those. In addition they have two leg spinners Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan so they cover all bases if the wicket wears in hot and dry weather (which is forecast after tomorrow). They are a very exciting and well equipped team so you don't want to go one down to these. They're not as brittle as the Windies and if we let them get off to a flyer we could easily struggle.
