Cricket

I'm not sure that it quite true, every game you play is a chance to impress or not. If Bairstow plays it shoukd be as a batsman and the queue has been jumoed for now. Buttler is far better suited to the number 7 slot, an intelligent reader of the game who can play in a number of ways and isn't worried about his average if he needs to attack. Buttler is also better than Bairstow with the gloves lately as weve seen today, though Biarstow is a wonderful outfielder. I'm not all that worried about glovework though as long as its solid.
I reckon bairstow is a better test cricketer than buttler. Of course that's just our opinions.

Good to see some of the young/new lads getting some runs. We've got some depth that's for sure.

Love Willey (stop it...) in the limited overs game and he's been so unlucky that he's not been a regular starter due to the strength/size of our pool.

A bit of a middle order collapse gave the Irish a slight window of opportunity as Bairstow, Morgan and Ali all fell one after the other, but a blistering 82 off just 41 balls from Jonny Bairstow had already assured an England win as long as they weren't bowled out. With 70 or 80 runs still to get but all the time in the world to get them, Sam Billings once again showed he is one of the select few to be considered going forward. Showing his maturity and keeping a calm head to avoid any further calamitied, he was joined by the big striking David Willey who reminded everyone of his prowess with the bat to see England home with a massive 105 balls to spare, both making unbeaten 40's.

Earlier in the innings the cup final might have seemed a bigger attraction for some as Roy once again found a way to get out early, this time chasing a loose and wide delivery but only managing to squirt it into the covers where a good low catch was taken.
Young Campher seems to rapidly be turning himself into Ireland's version of fellow South African K.P. (who was again on commentary). This time he showed he can do it with the ball too, bowling the hapless James Vince for another fine knock of 16 - he may only have one last chance left, and the disappointing Tom Banton (lbw) who seems to leave his talent behind when (supposedly) stepping up a level.

Bairstow who had looked extraordinarily rusty behind the stumps earlier, had meanwhile been absolutely rattling along with boundaries and sixes to all parts and must have been completely bewildered by what was happening at the other end, so it was a big disappointment for the 'non-crowd' when he too got out but not before he'd made the major contribution towards winning the match - what an innings too, even given the opposition. Morgan and Ali followed almost immediately without troubling the scorers, but that was as good as it got for Ireland who simply fell way short with the bat yet again.

I actually think the players to come out of these two matches in credit are Sam Billings, David Willey, Reece Topley and Saqib Mahmood and those who may need to be ditched are definitely James Vince but to an extent Tom Banton too, he seriously needs to take one if his numerous chances or they will eventually lose patience, but does at least have time on his side and obvious talent if only he can start producing.

(from the fringe players not the openers, Morgan or spinners although notably Adil Rashid and Jonny Bairstow have been impressive - Jonny won't be keeping ahead of Morgan)

From this match two names from those on the fringe excelled

Sam Billings and Reece Topley (Willey too with the bat but not with his preferred discipline- the one he's really picked for, bowling where after his initial spell he again looked ineffectual - which really limits him to opening up and not bowling any more overs after his opening spell)

Adil Rashid to me is now bowling his leg spinner with revs and the googly through the speeds, he's bowling right at the top of his game and must be considered as our number one spinner - and perhaps the best spinner in the world right now imo - We have to get him into the test side if he would consider it

Root never seemed to trust him. The spinners job for us seems to be to just hold an end rather than take wickets. I like Rashid but he does throw down a pie now and then. Still our best spinner by a mile like.

His economy is never amazing but we won the world cup because of his ability to pick up wickets, especially in the middle overs.

His long problem with his injured shoulder impeding his action seem to be over, just on the eye test spinning his stock delivery with a fair tweak and the googly out the back of the hand, he's pitching it brilliantly and he can bowl it at different speeds too.

He now can vary the loop and trajectory of the ball, the batsmen can't seem to pick his googly and don't know which way it may turn, brilliant atm for me.

He has to be better than Bess, Ali or Leach, the only reason he's not picked now is because he's only made a commitment to playing the white ball game a decision as much to do about protecting his shoulder than anything else.

With this enforced break his shoulder problems look to have been sorted. If he would reconsider and commit to red ball too I'm sure he'd walk into the team, there is noone of his type obviously better than him in world cricket atm in my opinion.

Yeah you could be right. Not sure there’s any amazing test spinners at the minute. Lyon is under rated I think.

...I’m listening to the commentary of the Lancashire game via BBC website and they have said a ‘live stream’ is available on each County’s website. 283-7.

Wasn’t sure of the rules for this Bob Willis competition, but it seems like there is a limited no of overs (120) in first innings. 3 regional groups of 6 counties and the two teams with most points play in the final at Lords.
