Cricket

It was a good day for England yesterday. Pope looks a fantastic player to me. The way he moves the feet, and attacks the ball without taking too many risks is brilliant. England have found one their for sure.

I saw @Lanolin and I'm inclined to agree somewhat. Getting out post 50 again is a bit of a problem. My major concern with him is, as with lotsof England's top order they dont get out of gear 1. I'm not saying they need to get to gear 5, but you need to go through to gears 2-3 as you get in. They just seem to bat balls, which when the ball goes soft, and you are "in" is just eating up time until the 2nd new ball comes. They don't see to be able to accelerate enough. Crawley is quite different, he has ots of different shots and see him having more potential in this side.

At present, we don't have many openers in County cricket, so his place is secure, but you do wonder for how long.

I'm not convined on that at all. I mean Broad got 6 wickets at OT whichis good but not etirely game changing.

Anderson and Broad are a problem, as I said the other. Anderson is 40 and Broad will be nearly 37 when the net Ashes come. Neither sre suited to bowling in Australia. How they manage this, and to a lesser degree Woakes and Curran who are far more suited to England will be interesting. Wood bowles the perfect length for Australia.

If you look at Broads record in Australia in the 3 eries so far there, he has averagd 80, 47 and 35 I think. Even in the peak of his powers he's not done much. You do also have to factor in deterioration, Anderson is a better athlete than Broad but both pose a problem. At their age, I doubt euther will offer much in Australia.

If you were forward planning, Woakes and Curran could both have a part to play with their batting, probably with 2 out an out quicks and potentially a spin bowler. That would be the way I went.

Yes the reasons for the selection were reasonable and understandable, as to looking long term and forward to the eventual aim of developing a formula and attack that can last the distance. To have to start looking at alternatives to the Broad Anderson axis is imperative going forward as is the requirement to get test match miles and experience into their real quicks as well as potential support bowlers.

The motives were understandable so the comment is only relevant to the far narrower perspective of just winning this series alone .

Yeah I agree with all that.

Pope just looks brilliant, both in terms of technique and temperament. He is a potential superstar I think.

You’ve hit the nail on the head with burns I think. He’s done fine, he’s deserved his place by virtue of being the best on the county circuit and he’s done a job since he came in. Long term we need more than that though. I was surprised to see Chris saying above that he’d proved people wrong with this innings, I’d say the exact opposite really. Seeing off the new ball is good, but you’ve then got to do something more. Once again we were left in a position where other people needed to bale us out, both in terms of runs and run rate. Burns needs to turn his 40s and 50s into proper scores. Personally I’m generally content for buttler to just score 50s batting at 7, tons are a bonus really for a 7, but not for an opener.

Burns recent averages

Australia last summer 39

New Zealand two tests 61.34

South Africa 46

Then a long break with absolutely no cricket and it's taken time to get going even so he got 30, 42, 15 and 57.

Not even a question mark for me, nowhere near in fact.

To me that represents a batsman who is now coming good, and an opener too. It would take more than a couple of poor innings, after an extended break from all cricket, to convince me of the case for dropping him tbh, and he hasn't even had that. Quick feet, gets in line, passes the eye test and looks the part.
