Mark Butcher trying to defend a pretty poor decision - although tbf probably playing devil's advocate, but even so it's much to Dominic Cork's annoyance. Butcher is really a very poor anchor man imo - you can't be so strident especially when he's also let the West Indies down.

It's a stupid and possibly reckless, but at least thoughtless action and I hope he learns from it because..

One, it's cost him a place in the team

Secondly it's thrown England's bowling plans into disarray in a vital test match that they have to win to keep the series alive.

Thirdly because it's put at risk all the work the ECB have done to get this game on, they had to do a tremendous amount of work to try to ensure the environment would be completely free of any likely source of the virus. The protocols might seem very severe but they had to put them in place to get the permission for the games to happen.

Fourthly The game depends on broadcasting money and it's crucial for both sides that the protocols are not only effective but seen to be scrupulously observed.

The West Indies have taken quite extraordinary measures to be able to provide the opposition and Phil Simmons had to then be told Jofra had gone home to Sussex from Hampshire. He must have thought after what we've been through...and you can't blame him.

Mikey Holding seemed to be seething, extremely annoyed by it, "I have no sympathy at all, I don't understand why people can't just do what is required, talk about sacrifices (shaking his head) Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in a little cell after doing nothing wrong, that's sacrifice"

To divert from Hampshire to Sussex isn't just a small thing it's bloody stupid.

All this is obviously way above Ravi Bopara's head or to be kind his reaction was possibly an entirely kneejerk one before he'd engaged his brain.

Tbh Ravi Bopara is pretty much on his own as one who hasn't the sense to appreciate or have any idea that it was actually a stupid mistake that fully deserved the sanction it got.

Jofra will face a disciplinary panel after putting at risk England's entire summer program.

Missing this match and the five day isolation is not s punishment but part of the strict Covid 19 protocols it in place to endure a safe environment.

He apparently met another person in Sussex who has since tested negative. He was meant to drive straight from Southampton to Manchester.

Ashley Giles had apologised to all concerned including the West Indian tourists. A positive result would have had catastrophic effects for the whole summer program and by breaking the protocols has shown they're not as secure as they thought.

He's likely to face a punishment which could rule him out of the third and possibly deciding test.

Good toss to win, swung all day but the pitch is slow making any additional seam movement difficult to to exploit. Anderson would have been in his element today. Englsnd were off to the usual start with an early order collapse either side off an early lunch. Well done Zac Crawley - where's Denly when needed :D, at least Burns scored twenty odd. Joe Root's wicket had them rocking at 81-3 but star man Ben Stokes joined fast improving Stayer Sibley to grind out an unbeaten 126 partnership to take it on to 207-3.

England bat very long indeed with Dom Bess possibly the best number ten in the world. Having been put in this is a very strong position indeed.

A fair summary. All I will say re Crawley, is as a batsman you are more disappointed to get to 20 and give it away, than t get out early which can happen.

Apparently England feared the loss of £380 million if they could not fulfill their fixtures and any breaking of strict protocols with a positive test would result in this being the case.

Listen to Butcher when he is doing the West Indies 20/20.

He is clearly filing his boots with all that’s on offer.. and fair play to him.

Bopara tweeted:-

Hold on, u telling me @JofraArcher can’t play because he stopped off at his flat on the way to old Trafford? Seriously man, this is the biggest overreaction if I’ve ever seen one.

Any breach of the biosecure environment would be sure to be looked on by the ECB with what would be quite frankly, disbelief and fury, they'd worked so hard to set this up, no crowds only two very secure environments, regular testing and isolation away from contamination, they'd convinced the relevant authorities it was absolutely safe and secure and got the go ahead.

It's easy to issue such a glib comment but really perhaps not the most intelligent response from Bopara who hasn't had the tiniest part in all these painstaking arrangements, does him no favours at all.
Hang him. However, before we do let's ask a question. How come footballers who stand in each others faces, sweat and breathe over each other are allowed to go home? Yet cricketers who don't always break sweat and stand miles apart have to be locked up in Old Trafford. I really don't get it.

You couldn't have blamed Stokes if he'd carried on batting at 6 or 7 and been the man playing some shots but the way he knuckles down in his batting shows what ability he has. Not many Test players over the years show the intelligence to knuckle down when required but at last England have someone.
Probably the best England player of his generation.

Fully agree, the difference is stark and the treatment of the two sports quite different too. Unfair or not, and it isn't, cricket has to live by different standards to get the go ahead.
