Ollie Pope has it all, I've said before he's has by far the best technique of the new boys, albeit opening the innings (or number 3) does of necessity require a different approach and, to a certain extent, skillset.

Looks completely natural and at home either side of the wicket, pleasing on the eye - As said in the posts above - a modern version of Ian Bell

I think Atherton described him as having something of a combination of the styles of both Root and Bell about him - could hardly pay him a higher compliment

I’ve barely seen a more average spinner than Bess, just hope he can do something in the fourth innings (if SA have to bat again!), but Root’s field placings are not helping him, as per. There’s just no pressure on the batsmen, Elgar & vd Dussen knocking it around with ease.

to be fair I thought the same and he needs a bit more about him to have a long successful test career.
Could be some fireworks with de kock in now

Bess is far from experienced and still learning the art but rarely have England had a spinner who's such a quick learner with such a perfect temperament to cope.

He's not only shown his abilities as a containing bowler in the last test but now with conditions more in his favour has turned up and exceeded expectations as a wicket taker. If Root had caught Nortje, as he could and should have, he'd have six

He's still young and spinners don't normally reach their prime until their late twenties at the earliest but his future looks bright indeed.

It was a massively fortuitous stroke of luck or good thinking when they looked outside of the squad for a replacement to Leach having mistakenly left him out in the first place, but he's capitalised fully on it.

Glad he has proved me wrong in this match! He has that starting off skip a la Nathan Lyon, but seems to lack acceleration through his action, a bit like Moeen. Things are looking promising though going forward, with Pope looking the real deal at only 22, and Wood returning. Denly also looking like a good bowling option.
