Haseeb Hameed signed for Notts - I wish him well. May have been better if he'd moved further away from his family but it's a fresh start and perhaps the Notts coaches will have better luck than their Lancashire counterparts.

Peter Moores is an arm around the shoulder manager rather than Paul Allott who told Hameed he was hanging in to his contract by a finger nail.
Hopefully Hameed will come again because Kohli rated him

England to bat, I like the decison to give Buttler the gloves and play another batsman, just feels much more solid. Curran over woakes all day for me gives us variety and we don't lose a batting number 8 either as Curran really counter attacks well. For all his good work as a tailender Leach is picked as a front line spinner and really needs to either threaten or give us control for long periods as he hasn't done that so far for me. Looking forward to this, already agreed to take the GF out over the weekend to make up for me falling asleep to TMS over the next 4/5 days

Watching on sky, the pitch looks fairly even in colour tbh, unlike the photo above - whether due to being rolled in I'm not sure.

First hour is crucial as after that the kookaburra loses any swing and batting gets easier.

New Zealand are very formidable at home and absolutely especially so in a two test series where it's absolutely impossible for any acclimatised tourists to become far stronger as the series progresses and gets into stride.

Two test 'series' are a contradiction in terms and really should be termed consecutive one-off tests.

Hit them hard before they're properly acclimatised and there's no time for recovery -ideal for the home side

Sibley gone but wonder whether that open chested drive makes him vulnerable to nicking off if the ball is drivable length but just outside the off stump. Always looking to play across to leg with the bottom hand.

A first failure but test sides will work him out and he's shown enough chinks in his technique for them to analyse and work on.

County attacks are one thing but top bowlers work you out.

As you say the analytical resources international sides have is a big difference for batsman especially, you will be scrutinized far more for weaknesses or potential weaknesses

Yeah it'll be up to him to work out a defence or to put the open chested off drive away. He'll get runs in his first knock as the bowlers haven't really seen him before but not after this

Top test bowlers are good enough and accurate enough to now almost exclusively target the full ball outside off - almost on fifth stump to Sibley. His runs will either dry up completely if he puts the shot away or he'll nick off.

Some remedial work needed on his technique if he's to prosper at the higher level imo.

New Zealand's bowlers without discernable swing or movement on a flat pitch aren't the toughest attack (in these conditions and on this wicket).

(No criticism as they're top quality bowlers but the pitch is offering nothing and they specialise in swing and lateral movement rather than pure pace)
