Matt Parkinson form big for England with Adil Rashid nursing injury, says Nasser Hussain

"Bowling leg-spin, if you get the slight yips in your first game it can go horribly wrong but he came in and looked like and looked like he had played a lot of cricket."

Nasser seems to be very impressed with Matt Parkinson's two over debut and he's the only one of the new boys to have grabbed his chance. Obviously two overs is very little to go on but he has the temperament and control and it's there for all to see.

He should possibly have been bowled out - although i realise wrist spinners can go for a few if bowled at the wrong times. He could hardly have been more expensive than Mahmood who again went round the park, - although admittedly hindsight is just not available to the skipper.

On a postage stamp of a ground this England XI hammered NZ. A few senior players back in with the brilliant Jordan (even if expensive, postage stamp) and Bairstow but it was Malan and Morgan who put it way beyond New Zealand, a real walloping with Matt Parkinson who got four, and it could and should have been more, standing out with the ball.

Wonderful batting from Malan and the skipper followed by a wicket taking spell from Parkinson with NZ having to go for it set up the win, perfect for a wrist spinner who really doesn't have to care about conceding if he keeps getting them out.

Parkinson got four but it could have been five with a missed lbw and Brown dropping a catch. Once again the new boys in the field proved embarrassing at times, Brown got everything right in the outfield for a regulation catch but it went on to hit his cap rather than him catching it and Gregory (didnt bat, didnt bowl) comically runs past one in the same spell - what's he in the team for?

This series was always about a fact finding mission for England and if they could dig out some new 'hidden' talent to supplement the senior players not here. Most of the new boys have shown they're not ready yet and have things to learn, but there is one massive exception to that and a huge bonus, one who has stood up and practically shouted 'look at me I'm good and here to stay'.

Lancashire's Matt Parkinson

With Adil struggling with his shoulder the timing couldn't be better, his figures over the last few years have told everyone he's perfect for this format and now he's proving it.

New Zealand must be sick of the sight of England : another super over win !.

No need for any boundary count back checks this time (not in the rules here anyway) but by World cup final standards, this was a stroll in the park.

There were two big moments when another weakened England line up looked to be in an absolutely hopeless position and the game well and truly lost....

1) With 146 needed off eleven overs in a drastically rain reduced game, a target set following some hugely explosive batting fireworks from Guptil (50 off just 19 balls) on another tiny ground for cricket, England almost put the result beyond any doubt at all. They lost their first two wickets in just seven balls before Jonny Bairstow with help from Morgan and Sam Curran got them within range and Chris Jordan's late three ball blitz forced a tie.

2) Then with 13 needed off just three balls to win when Jordan strolled out into the middle, Chris took it on - hitting the first for six, the second for a couple and the last for a boundary to tie the match and mean a super over would decide it.

In the super over Bairstow and Morgs hit 17 and this time New Zealand could only manage 8 against the, brilliant Jordan.

Easy for England.

:D :D :D :D :D

(England, continuing their policy of giving everyone a game, and therefore maximising the opportunities for different players over winning the series, axed centurion Dawid Malan and new bowling hero Matt Parkinson with another opportunity for Mahmoud (who rewarded them being the most economical of all the bowlers!) and Gregory who continued to pose the question 'what on earth is he in the side for?')

This series win is all the more impressive as it was close to being an England Lions T20 team rather than anything approaching full strength.

Matt Parkinson the stand out amongst the younger players although we have seen glimpses of Banton's potential notably with his 30 in the fourth. None of the others showed they were anywhere near ready with Lewis Gregory the most ineffectual of all.

Of the more experienced players, Chris Jordan is always for me featuring in their strongest T20 eleven and will do so once again while Dawid Malan may put pressure on Joe Root's position with Joe, James Vince and himself perhaps battling for just one batting place available.

Apparently it was very weak, naive and inexperienced opposition but encouraging all the same. Reading Sibley at 6 foot five has a very chest on stance, holds the bat low on the handle and walks across his stumps obscuring them on delivery, hence nearly always dragging his drives towards the leg side. Crawley with the straight side on stance is far more technically correct.

The better bowlers at test level will soon pick up on the technical flaws and look to expose him. He may rather like Adam Lyth have some success early on before they have the chance but hope to overcome greater scrutiny too.

However Rory Burns hasn't exactly got a text book style either and if Sibley can progress in similar fashion he could be the opener we've been searching for. It's often far more about temperament than having a text book technique at the highest level anyway. His technique has got him this far and could get him all the way.
