James Vince was again the star, only this time for New Zealand, he dropped three catches and was right, left and centre of an incredibly sloppy fielding display which meant NZ levelled at 1:1

Vince who did make 50 and rightly earned the man of the match award in the first had done so despite perhaps giving a sneak preview of just what he was capable of in the field by dropping a sitter but here his fielding sunk far below anything shown previously.

When it came to the batting Bairstow went first over before Malan and Morgan threatened to get them up to the score, runs too for Jordan late on but Vince compounded his bravura display in the field with a failure with the bat.

The wickets shared between Santner, Southee, Ferguson and Sodhi.

Indeed two absolutely routine chances in Siefert and most glaringly New Zealand's top-scorer Jimmy Neesham (42 off 22) - his drop of Neesham on four proving particularly costly.

While not exactly in the Simon Kerrigan debut category Lancashire seamer Mahmood (1-46) - made a debut to instantly forget about - he must he hoping the selectors do too, although he did capture Seifert his first international wicket - while the other relatively new boy Pat Brown (0-32 off two overs) also endured a chastening day with the ball. Three wickets for Jordan made him England's standout performer.

I can see all of England's T20 regulars having few sleepless nights about walking back into the team.

I didn't bother watching the game, Chris, but BBC website suggests Mahmoud bowled OK after conceding 15 in his 1st over. which, if he was bowling to Guptill, could happen to anyone. Figures didn't flatter him ,they suggest, while Agnew was also impressed. Personally, I like him, although he's still learning the game. If he progresses properly, and wants to be a red ball bowler rather than going around playing 20/20 competitions, he could be a proper England player in a couple of years.

Bowled at the beginning and end of the innings, that's always difficult, especially on your debut.

Yes he's definitely a prospect and being expensive in a T20 where you only have four overs is hardly unique and can happen for a multitude of reasons. Be hit around the park in only one or two overs and the figures are very poor, there is no long spell to recover them but it doesn't mean he's not a prospect.

Brown too had a day he'd rather forget, with two overs that were hammered all over the place. Both lads are inexperienced at this level, its not a criticism but a fact and both came under fire, although quite obviously neither should be writing their careers off over such limited exposure, there will be further opportunities to make their mark.

My main criticism was focussed on the abysmal fielding and putting down six catches (James Vince three by himself) rather than the extremely inexperienced bowling line up. That more than the bowling lost the match.

The know how and pacy threat of Chris Lewis set a tough standard and perhaps the contrast between someone who has been at this level for years and the new boys made their efforts that much more underwhelming.

England have a strong cadre of players not touring who will make their T20 world cup team very formidable indeed. These limited chances for the inexperienced new and aspiring players could be their only real chance to show they could put pressure on them.
