Nick Hoult reports

Gary Kirsten is inline to be appointed England coach later this week in what has to be seen as a major coup for Ashley Giles.

Giles will hold face-to-face talks with Kirsten at Lord’s on Wednesday to finalise a deal to replace Trevor Bayliss who left the England job at the end of the Ashes series and an appointment is expected by the end of the week barring any last minute hitches.

Have to say if this is true it will be an absolutely top drawer appointment, couldn't get a better candidate imo, well done Giles.

Correct, again

Silverwood wasn't their first choice but was left as the only man standing after their hoped for candidate Peter Kirsten, who had such a wonderful CV including taking India and South Africa to no 1 in the Test rankings and India to the 2011 World Cup, had different expectations of what the job would entail and how many hours he would be expected to put in.

It was also understood after Kirsten's job expectation didnt meet requirements Alec Stewart would have got it after an extremely impressive presentation but pulled out for family reasons.

The BBC report seems to suggest that Silverwood pipped the others but reading between the lines it looks as though far from that, he was just the last man standing

As Nick Hoult writes

He (Kirsten) was disappointing in interview giving an underwhelming presentation and during talks it emerged there were differences between his expectations of how much time he would be on the road to England’s idea of the level of commitment expected from their head coach.

I don't think those things contradict eachother do they? Kirsten still wants the job according to that, so Silverwood has pipped him by virtue of doing a better presentation and coming across as more committed.

No technically not but to me it's implied more than anything. Kirsten would undoubtedly have been their number one choice had he been able to give a commitment to the number of hours they needed from their coach, he obviously had less in mind and left them no choice to move to a perhaps less favoured option.

From all accounts Alec Stewart waa that option but personal or family reasons meant he could no longer be considered.

Moving then to Silverwood, you could say he pipped them and technically there isn't the contradiction as other candidates had to be ruled out, but it's them being ruled out that left the option of Silverwood getting it, that's the way it comes across anyway.

With any new appointment you need and will stress the positives and Chris has positives going for him. It's not we're just left with him so make the best of it. He does have experience with the team as bowling coach and knows the county game better than Bayliss. I think Peter Moores also knew the county game well and of course with no English coach in the hundred it perhaps answers the accusation they're ignored. None of the latter makes him the best choice though imo.

I won't rush to judge him, lots of pundits have been glowing in their praise and I hope it's justified and wish him all the best.
