Yes saw that although perhaps rescued from a defeat by leaders Essex anyway who themselves were left frustrated by the weather having Somerset in all kinds of trouble before lunch

Not gonna pretend I follow it closely, just saw the local press a few weeks ago and some comments from Vic Marks on TMS recently that they were doing well.

The last time I took much interest was when they did well in the Gilette and JPS things with Botham Richards, and I think, Garner in the side.

Full Test squad: Joe Root (c), Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Saqib Mahmood, Matt Parkinson, Ollie Pope, Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes

Full T20I squad: Eoin Morgan (c), Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Pat Brown, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Lewis Gregory, Chris Jordan, Saqib Mahmood, Dawid Malan, Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, James Vince.

----

Headline omissions from the test squad; Bairstow, Foakes, Wood, Stone, Rashid, Moeen and Anderson.

T20 squad; Hales, Roy, Buttler, Stokes, Archer, Willey and Moeen.

Happy with the test squad as it was always thought the New Zealand tour the right place to give some a rest and a chance for promising young players. Bairstow looked to be suffering from a long summer and hadn't shown much at test level for a time, he is dropped but needed a break anyway. His keeping though did impress in the last test.

The T20 squad again looks a chance to look at some others who could contribute in the build up to the world cup in two years time.

Tom Banton has made a ton of runs in the blast and deserves a chance as does Mahmood and Parkinson who impressed for Lancs in topping the North group before gaining an away draw for the knockout phase.

It's obviously very much experimental with a few big stars given a break after their exertions in the summer and Stokes Buttler and Archer only doing the tests. Rashid is probably doubtful to make it with his chronic shoulder injury although still named.

Mark Wood and Olly Stone, together with Jimmy Anderson were not considered as injured and possibly the South Africa tour the target. (Rashid too although named in the T20 squad)
Lancashire actually got a home quarter-final but due to incompetence all round played at Durham.

Have to say although Dominic Sibley fully deserves his tour place after scoring a mountain of runs this summer, Zac Crawley is more than a little fortunate to be selected. Zac only averages 31 in the championship this season and at only 21 it has to be perhaps far too much to expect him to make any sort of impression at an even higher level against far better bowlers.

It may have been the same test match, but I was amazed to hear Vic Marks say that Somerset had never won the County Championship - I think he was on with Glen McGrath at the time. I thought back to the Richards, Botham, Garner team and how good they were. Incredible that they didn't win it with that talent.

You sense they want to have a proper look at him. I know it sounds an odd thing to say, but at 21, opening in England the average becomes a bit of a secondary point. You are going to get better, so they will have a better look at him. I have said a few times, that I see the end of an Ashes series as a good moment to re-set and with the selection of Crawley, Pope, Sibley, Parkinson and Mahmoud they've done that so I can't complain.

Looks very much like a 12 plus 3 squad to me tbh with Zac amongst the three who will have net practice and be on standby if needed. Taken on tour to gain experience of being around the team.

They'll see how he fares on tour but unlikely to get near actually playing tests unless injury strikes imo.

Looks as though the county championship is on it's way to Chelmsford again for the second time in recent years.

Somerset needing to beat Essex on the usual rampant turner at Cider-abad are only 178 ahead with Essex 25-0 in reply to 203 in their first innings. The start of day three is delayed and tomorrow is the last day, so Somerset's chances of victory, even with their usual doctored wicket, must be minimal now with only another 28 required to make Somerset bat next.

Spotted a lad opening for Essex that looks as though he could be quite useful for England one day.

Cookies career maybe has a few more chapters to run after his great send off at the Oval last year
