Here you cannot grow ripe tomatoes in the UK - without heating & lighting in the UK .... the shortage is because of a freak snowstorm in Spain & Africa a month ago which wiped outdoor crops of some vegetables are in short supply for about 3-4 weeks .....
That's for charlatans or the simpletons as Betty Boothroyd once described. Overwhelmingly the comment from growers in various independent members of the EU and further, they fully blame Brexit also the UK trying mitigate increases in food price is attempting to fix prices in countries like Morocco and in response to new trade deals with EU is now turning away from UK market.

You are posting against a former member of the institute of Horticulture - we have only ever produced a bulk of the tomato crop in season - out of season in normal energy prices were normal has been carried out on a small scale as Tomatoes under glass produce a thick skinned tomato in the UK - last summer a hot one a Tomato grown outdoors has a thinner skin as they get full sunshine - freak snowstorms in Africa & southern Spain where the daylight & heat vegetable crops outside has been a disaster - all food prices are going up due to fertiliser cost worldwide - hydroponics & light can grow quick catch crops like lettuce etc in this country, but energy costs all over Europe have risen over the war & Putin - you can factor loads of things in, but any shortage causes panic buying, & prices will rise .....

Almost an expert then, not very Brexit is an expert. Anyway, Morocco producers are now favoring main land Europe due to favorable terms in their new trade deal with EU and its member states. Besides even accepting for moment the weather as sole problem, its the trouble with relaying on imported food which thus far has been championed by Brexit as good for consumers. There is little to no shortage of fresh food inside the single market, I wonder why.

The reason European countries like France etc get a larger supply is because the corporate industries have contacts with growers is the Dutch whose main horticultural industry supplies first in vast amounts ...
I am not against us being in a European single market as I voted for it twice .....
I feel the UK will eventually rejoin the single market - but never the full EU as NI demonstrated yesterday -

Never the less a shortage in any market prices will sore .....& greedy panic buying will not help .....

Plus snowing in Majorca today .......also last year's UK drought has made things worse too.....

Freak weather conditions will hit everyone......in the food chain .....

Running a Nursery like I did the biggest outlay apart from Labour was heating cost ...... before the freak weather in southern Spain & Africa was the a vegetable crisis ?

All food prices with inflation have risen - more than other goods .....you can blame anything our economy crashed under Truss eg -
Labour if they get in will have an opportunity to create growth in the economy.....
The agricultural & Horticultural industries need a level playing field pardon the puns ....

There’s a 2 bedroom ex local authority over 60’s bungalow just gone on sale about 150 yards from my house …. A few years ago you could pick one of these up for 70k tops….. it’s on the market today for £160,000….. what chance have youngsters got to get on the housing ladder ???
