It is true though that many people seem to be taking the attitude that it isn't going to get me, so don't you dare cancel the footie!
Because it’s been completely overhyped by the media. It’s exactly what happened with SARS, Ebola etc. The media have created a generation of people who have survived the worlds deadliest plagues.

The impact of this is nowhere near as huge as is being made out. People are fed up of being made to live in fear.

Yes there was a reported case of the Corona Virus in Amazon's 'Brazil' (it's a name) building as of the start of this week. E-mail sent to all staff there (thousands of them) to work from home until end of the month.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of places are using this as a test for wider spread home working. Save on the overheads of expensive buildings.

Just got off the blower with a guy that runs a telehealth platform. He was quietly happy, not only because his tech can be used to remote monitor people, but the sense of urgency caused by the situation was a welcome change to the sclerotic pace of adoption in healthcare under normal circumstances.

The Spanish flu-
It is estimated that one third of the global population was infected, and the World Health Organization estimates that 2–3% of those who were infected died (case-fatality ratio). Estimates vary as to the total number who died. An estimate from 1991 says it killed 25–39 million people.

I know we live in different times with better medical care and facilities but still...

You're right, a big problem with the media and politics is its just clickbait manipulation, and lies, lies, lies. From 911 to the Iraq war, and the ridiculous 'war on terror' nobody believes either the politicians or their support structure the mass media anymore. The war on terror was a lie and predicated upon the biggest lie in history. You won't find many more cynical about the media and politics than me, but you only have to take a look at what this virus has done elsewhere in the world, and read up about similar virus' and listen to the doctors and experts to know that, its not something to be sniffed at.

“A statement from Royal Berkshire NHS Trust said: "Sadly, we can confirm that an older patient with underlying health conditions has died. The patient has previously been in and out of hospital for non-coronavirus reasons, but on this occasion was admitted and last night tested positive for coronavirus.“.....
Here in France 8 people reported dead with the virus. Not one of them was under 60,in fact half were over 80. All had existing medical conditions.

As an aside, of the 40,000 deaths from flu each year in the United States, the CDC estimate that up to 80% of those are people aged over 65. Despite that, just 15% of CCGs met the WHOs target of 75% of elderly folk getting the flu vaccine, with the average across the country seeing 28% of older people not getting jabbed.

Another £46M Johnson has just said the government will throw at this.

This colossal helmet is so far off the pace on all this it'd be laughable if people werren't going to be killed by it.

£1.162 TRILLION was found to bail out British banks in the financial crash.

That's where their priorities lie.

Not really Dave, it shows the problem in that older populations are more likely to die from it because of existing issues. The tweets also go on to explore the fact that certain genetic populations, including the Chinese and Italians, also tend to have more of the receptors that the virus is attached to.

But use it for a good old rant about neo-liberalism days after extolling the virtues of oppressive governments.

The fact that you are so thick is actually offensive.
Aren't old people more at risk of any infection they catch? I wouldn't be surprised to see a similar ratio for those with flu, for instance.
You both misunderstood my post. I'm not denying the outcome for people as they get older is more grim than for younger people; I'm saying that there is, amongst some people, an improper 'I'm alright Jack' attitude to the age differentials in that respect.

It's nauseating and underlines to me just how atomised we've become as a society. Where is the sense of community amongst these people?

If SARS had spread like Coronavirus has there'd be real problems. SARS had a mortality rate of 10%. Covid-19 isn't in the same league.

The flu is mainly spread by coughing, as the NHS website suggests coronavirus is also. It too mainly affects the elderly (in terms of mortality at least), and yet while people could quite probably have better hygiene and consideration when coming to work when unwell, we don't ask for public events to be shut down for it or accuse other people of being toe rags for killing off the elderly.

Don't cough in people's faces, wash your hands well, and if you feel unwell, don't go out, seems to be advice you should apply to the flu as much as you should this virus. To use words like nauseating seems in keeping with the general hysteria this situation is creating.

The mortality rate is 10-30x that of conventional flu. Symptoms appear far later and it appears to be more contagious. Throw in the fact it could mutate and become more deadly. I think there's good reason to be concerned.

I would have thought the mortality rate would be very unreliable simply because we don't know how many people had it but didn't report it. Given that the guidance suggests for many, the symptoms are pretty mild, that seems like it could be pretty high. We also have to remember that the ordinary flu has a vaccine, which this virus doesn't (yet).
