We only have ourselves to blame, we clamored for cheaper TVs, phones etc, knowing all along that it was basically slave labor and in some cases child labor. That made these items so cheap.

I'm not even talking about the billionaires here who maliciously profited. We have to turn the mirror on ourselves. As consumers. We're all complicit.

And because of our disregard for basic civil rights, liberties and working conditions that was sacrificed on the alter of consumerism there's a price to pay. It's now taking it's pound of flesh.

That cheap monitor, phone, TV or whatever you're reading this on, well guess what? For all our smug, self-entitled lives, karma is coming a knocking. And it's exacting it's toll. Payback is a bitch.

We had an entirely different option available - the one that Singapore and S Korea took of aggressive tresting/contract tracing but we in the West largely squandered that chance so the only other option is lockdown/quarantine that has a long history in pandemics.

To be fair, it's hard to replicate things across different cultures. If you look at education, for instance, the Korean hagwon are undoubtedly very effective at getting results, and perhaps fit the culture there (although that is debatable of course given the huge toll on mental health they place), but this approach hasn't migrated anywhere else at all. For instance, Hofstede's power distance index places Korea as a highly collectivist culture, whereas most of western Europe and the United States are largely individualist cultures. Asian cultures also score very highly on the deference to authority metric, so are more likely to do what they're told than western cultures.

Obviously this doesn't explain everything, but merely highlights how culture does play a part in what is both acceptable and effective in different countries.

He made a point about testing. How important it was. You waffled for an entire paragraph, that took me 5 times to read. Granted I may not be the sharpest tool in the box.

Culture is obviously a factor here. But surely, identifying, isolating and testing has to take priority. That's why folks are wondering why it wasn't implemented. In the circumstances, I think that query is warranted.

Hopefully you'll have figured it out by the end of the day. I'll leave you to it so you can crack on.

Lot of criticisms flying about but hindsight is a tremendous thing in these circumstances

It is. I was calling this out three weeks ago. The governments response on both sides of the Atlantic and who was to blame. The ramifications, unfortunately reveal I've been proven right.

Quick update:

Yesterday's daily deaths growth factor was minus 0.88, first time it's negative since March 16 (Saturday 3518 deaths worldwide, yesterday 3105)

Numbers and reports from Italy indicate that the worst is over and things slowing down

Many other European countries (like Austria and Switzerland) look like they passed the mid-way point and numbers going down

Obviously UK and specially US numbers are rising and that's expected since they both acted the latest/slowest

Stop worrying about what will happen in 6 months time, things are changing so fast that nobody knows anything about 6 days ahead, everything indicates that social distancing is working and the virus is slowing down in the places where actions were taken earlier than others, remember today's numbers are based on the situation 2 to 4 weeks ago, Italy is the first country outside China that went into lockdown, it happened exactly 3 weeks ago (9th of March)

It's as strong a indication that the world will ever get that we are all connected in some way. Human rights, animal welfare, illegal wars, it all matters and not just when it affects us directly

I just find it a bit weird that you felt the need to point out how right you are that thousands are going to die.

Looks like you've posted more in this thread in the past two weeks than in your entire four years on the site.

Perspective.

That's true, because people we're in danger. And what's the sum of your posts. Aye it'll be grand no need to worry.
