Not medical expertise, but practical experience.

If the treatment is "just" being lobbed on a vent till you recover, that can be done in any ward with isolation ability. Most of them that means. Respiratory ones certainly, (and they are miles bigger than ICUs)

ICUs have not that many beds, (21 in my case), and patients with other issues would most likely be there. That, and most ICUs were probably close to full pre CV anyrate.
That makes sense

So most of these cases won't be going through ICUs unless other issues (like heart) come to light during the treatment

the long term aim is to roll is out though isn’t it ?

Long term ... probably ( and / or vaccinate ), but that's not really "on the way" as per Joey's post.

Personally I can't see most people will have been tested to see if they've had it for months yet, and there'll be a pecking order ( essentials first etc ) There'll almost certainly be some sort of sampling of the population to see how widespread the infection has spread though, because that'll tell us how to proceed with lockdowns.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong Joey.

Frontline staff will be able to order a test if they, or someone in their household, are displaying symptoms

The bus driver's stalking you mate.
Stay safe
Evidently according to the LBC presenter the self home testing kit is allegedly not that far off ......? In fact you will be able to get a certificate to break the curfue on isolation, in the future?
He has volunteered to help with the NHS ..... which now has reached 750,000 volunteers and the government claim they now have enough volunteers......

Disheartening story from my hometown today. 8 suicides in the past 48 hours compared to 83 all of last year is pretty grim. And things really haven’t begun to get all that bad yet. We’ve only just been shut down for a couple weeks.

Just goes to highlight the impossibly tough decisions our leaders are being forced to make right now, and that they’re not as binary as “save lives vs. save the economy”. Even if we were able to totally lock everything down today and stop a single other person from dying from the virus, even that will unfortunately have a knock on effect as people find themselves feeling hopeless when their finances are left in ruin.

Fair enough, hope it's true mate. I do remember reading recently that the self tests might not be accurate enough yet, but, even so, the manufacture of them will need to be scaled up, so they'll go to where they're most needed first ... which would maybe tie up with the volunteers being close to the front of the queue ?

i don’t disagree I think it’s certainly a long term aim , I also think it’ll be available to those with a few quid . It’s a game changer though once it’s readily available

In my experience, yep. The thing about an ICU isnt the severity of a condition, more the intensity of the care. In an ICU, a nurse is with a patient 24/7. Literally by their bed/in their unit. Its pretty mundane. Meds, obvs, update records, (all digital).

So a CV patient, once stabilised, and on a vent/rigged up to heart and sats reading kit, doesnt need intensive care. If they crash, the machine goes off and a crash team legs it. If they dont, they can be weened off the vent once the lungs have improved/CV has gone.
